The Movie
Burn-Up Excess is just one of those anime shows that just screams out "fanservice" (i.e. a lot of female sexual suggestive shots inside) before you even put the disc in the DVD Player. Just looking from the cover alone you can see that this will be just one of those shows, but much like Steel Angel Kurumi, there is more under the hood than meets the eye.
This is the tale of Team Warrior, a partnership made up of Maya (who is on this cover) and Rio. They are two sexy ladies who kick ass and take names.
The fifth episode in the series finds Rio becoming a bodyguard for the popular idol singer Anna. Anna is doing several large concerts in the area and is being followed by a stalker. Along with trying to guard Anna from her stalker, Rio also finds out that Anna is in possession of a high-tech pen that the big bad guys want to get back. Rio finally goes up against the evil woman that has been in the background for a while.
The sixth episode goes back in time to show us the first meeting of Rio and Maki and how Rio came to be a part of Team Warrior. It also shows Maki's motivations and getting Team Warrior set up. Rio's prime motivation to join Team Warrior was for the money, but we all know Rio is poor. However it is clear that she is happier being poor and part of Team Warrior than being a gopher for the real cops in the precinct.
The final episode on this disc is a whodunit with some comedy. Maki goes off to investigate a grave. The history of the grave looks like it might be influencing the group that is the main bad guys in the series. Rio is left in charge of Team Warrior and she has cases that come in. She tries to solve them all quickly so she can get more money, a promotion and fame.
The DVD
Video: This aired in Japan back in 1997 and looks like a good transfer. I noticed no color problems or anything.
Sound: Presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 and in English, Japanese and Spanish. The English track on this disc is actually quite good. There is a bit of action in the rears since this is very much an action title, but the sound is not going to blow you away since it is a television show.
Menus: Laid out with the artwork and background of the cover, the menu is easy to navigate
Extras:
Opening and Closing Textless Credits: Mostly standard fare for an anime television series nowadays.
US Trailer: The US trailer for the show
Production Sketches: Sketches with the Japanese writing translated. Very nice.
Jiggle Counter: It makes a return here (not too surprising). They give you the total number from the last disc and then reset the numbers for this disc. Once again I question what they term as a jiggle, but who am I to argue, right?
Final Thoughts: Burn-Up Excess continues this show pretty well. The only minus I can think of is we have gone from 4 episodes in the first release to 3 episodes in this release. I am still enjoying the show a lot though. Highly Recommended.
