The Movie
While on a photo shoot in the Rockies with her husband Mark (Billy Burke) , Carla (Megan Ward), loses her sister Rachael off the edge of the cliff in an accident. Blaming herself, Carla starts having nightmares and hallucinations during the day that produce an increasing fear of heights. Seeking help, she joins an acrophobia group, lead by Dr. Paul Sadowski, to get herself straightened out. Paul (Terry Kinney, "Oz"), still suffering from some of his own fears as a result of losing a group of mountain climbers he was leading, pushes the group through a series of tests to over come their fears. But, strange things start to happen. The people in his contact group are starting to die. On the surface, they appear to be suicides or accidents, but clues are left behind implicating Carla. The police believe Carla is the key but Carla thinks it's the work of her fallen sister. Other things surface that implicate the doctor and cause remaining members of the group to panic. They want to leave but Carla holds them together only to watch more of them die, with more evidence at their sides implicating her. Carla is driven to near madness as she tries to explain what is happening. Is it her sisters ghost, the doctor that is trying to help her or is it her own doing during a delusional state. The real mystery starts to unfold, but can Holly survive the one final test.

Produced by Wes Craven and directed by Larry Shaw (Martial Law), this made for TV production is the softest in Wes' collection of thrillers. Known for his shockers like the "Scream" series and "Wishmaster", this endeavor based on one of this novels, is free of blood or visible assailants, relying instead on the fears and anxieties hidden in ones own mind. "Don't Look Down" is a first in a series of movies made in cooperation with ABC that will make Craven movies an annual event during Halloween.

The scenes, shot at dizzying angles, are filled with visual cues that tie in at later points in the movie. It moves along at a pace that does a good job at keeping your interest up. The lead acting is first rate and also has appearances from other veterans of Craven works including Aaron Smolenski (Wishmaster 3) and Tara Spencer Narin (Wishmaster: Prophecy Fulfilled) also available from Artisan Home Entertainment.

Final Thoughts
I feel it's harder to do a soft thriller of this type and make it come off as something good. There are no gruesome creatures, hacked bodies and blood flying to support the shock value, and being so, it really can't be placed in the category of a true horror flick. Devoid of these easy props to make you jump, Wes still does a great job at producing a movie that is interesting and suspenseful enough to keep you watching. The plot evolves nicely and defines the characters well enough for you to understand them, but not enough for you to draw any conclusions on who may be the true villains. Interspersed throughout are suggestions and clues that help divert you away from the real facts by spreading the blame for each unknown occurrence.

If you accept it for what it is, a made-for-TV production, you shouldn't be disappointed. If you're interested in what Wes can do on the lighter side, then I'd recommend you check it out. But do yourself a favor, don't read the insert or the case back so the ending is a surprise.
