"Tora! Tora! Tora!" is one of the most interesting war movies you'll ever see. Told from the perspectives of both the Americans and the Japanese, it deals with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The Japanese are shown preparing for it, and of course the Americans aren't aware of it. The separate presentation of the two sides of the conflict is intriguing. The intrigue is amplified by the fact that a Japanese crew shot the Japanese footage and an American crew is responsible for the footage of the Americans. As such, no one is presented as an evil villain. The lack of bias affords us a better opportunity to understand both sides of the story.
Fox has released "Tora! Tora! Tora!" on DVD, with above average video and sound quality. It has been digitally remastered and THX-approved; the anamorphic enhancement is another selling point. The transfer is top-notch, and mostly clean. Grain is at times evident, and there has been some fading, but such can be expected from a thirty-year old film. The Dolby Digital 4.1 soundtrack earns high marks, as well. Dialogue is all clear, as are the many sound effects. Supplementary features include the trailer for "Tora! Tora! Tora!," and trailers for "Patton" and "The Longest Day."
"Tora! Tora! Tora!" is highly recommended viewing due to its importance in both historical and cinematic areas. More extras would have been nice, but the audio/visual quality is high enough that the DVD would make a nice addition to most libraries.
