The Movie:

Track listing: Cold Cold Heart, Nightingale, One Flight Down, Seven Years, Feelin' the Same Way, Come Love, Something Is Calling You, Come Away with Me, What Am I to You?, Painter Song, Lonestar, I've Got to See You Again, Bessie Smith, Don't Know Why.

This DVD features a performance from jazz artist Norah Jones (winner of five Grammy Awards this year) at the House of Blues in New Orleans in 2002.

The DVD

VIDEO: EMI presents this concert performance in 1.33:1 full-frame. After a shaky, hand-held opening, I'd feared the worst, but once the performance starts in, this turns out to be a terrific presentation. Sharpness and detail are terrific, as the picture offered great clarity and detail in both close-ups and long shots.

Flaws were minor, if slightly noticable at times. Some very minor shimmering appeared in a couple of shots, as did a couple of very minimal compression artifacts. No edge enhancement showed up and, quite honestly, even the problems were present were so minor that most will not even notice. The stage lighting was beautifully presented throughout, looking well-saturated and vivid, with no smearing or other faults.

SOUND: The concert is presesented in Dolby Digital 5.1. The audio presentation is quite restrained, mainly choosing to remain front-heavy throughout the program. What little surround use there is (mainly audience applause) is appropriate, but a bit more reinforcement of the music by the rear channels would have been appreciated. While the DVD's audio presentation doesn't do much with the surround channels, at least the audio quality is extremely pleasant. After a terrible-sounding opening intro that lasts a couple of minutes, the concert starts in and sounds quite good. The music has a rich, bassy sound that really sounds realistic and "in-room". While the instruments are not spread around into the surrounds, they still remain nicely defined in the front speakers and share space with Jones' vocals very well.

EXTRAS: "Come Away With Me" music video and "Tennessee Waltz" concert encore.

Final Thoughts: Very good concert and a nice DVD too. While the DVD doesn't offer anything too out of the ordinary (only a couple of supplements, no DTS), audio/video quality is solid and the price ($14.95 or less) is very reasonable. Fans of Jones or those curious about her music after her Grammy sweep should definitely consider picking this DVD up.
