Best of Prime Time Glick, The
I can't stand Martin Short. I recognize that he is a talented man (much like Wayne Brady), but somehow, I never seem to laugh at anything he says or does. But for some reason, I never had a problem with his Jiminy Glick character. Jiminy is an overweight talk show host that never pays attention to anything his celebrity guests say, and frequently pigs out mid-interview.
The extremely underrated Michael McKean also stars as Jiminy Glick's over tanned, harp-playing sidekick. As a quintessential kiss-ass to Mr. Glick, he's good for an occasional laugh or two.
"Primetime Glick" is not just a late-night talk show parody, it also features "faux commercials" which usually feature Martin Short in full makeup as someone else (i.e. Conan O'Brien). One thing I like about "Primetime Glick" is that it has an ad-libbed feel to it. The celebrities play along with Glick's incessant ramblings, and in most cases, break character when Glick says something incredibly dumb.
Dubbed a "Best of" release, this DVD features five complete episodes, each with its own unique celebrity interviews. Each episode is approximately 24 minutes long. Below are episode listings based on celebrity interviews.
Episode 1: Dennis Miller & Jerry Seinfeld
Episode 2: Conan O'Brien & Eugene Levy
Episode 3: Darrell Hammond as Vice President Dick Chaney & Kathie Lee Gifford
Episode 4: Janeane Garofalo & John Salley
Episode 5: Bill Maher & Steve Martin
Video:
"The Best of Primetime Glick" is presented in full frame 1.33:1. For some reason, it looks much better on DVD than it did on Comedy Central. Colors look completely alive, as they are amazingly sharp and vivid, which is something I never expected from this release. Pixelation and artifacting are kept to a minimum. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the video presentation.
Audio:
The audio is presented in Dolby 2.0. The DVD comes off sounding very well on my system, as sounds are spread nicely throughout the speakers. Audience laughter/applause sounds great, and Jiminy Glick's incessant ramblings sound crisp and clean. There are no audio dropouts to report. Once again, a good job by Comedy Central.
Menus:
An interactive DVD menu with the theme song from "Primetime Glick" plays while Jiminy Glick dances for us. Options include "Play All", "Episodes", "Bonus Interviews", and "Comedy Central Quickies."
Extras:
"Bonus Interviews" are deleted portions of the interviews in the main feature. These are conducted with Conan O'Brien, Steve Martin, Kathie Lee Gifford, and Janeane Garofalo.
Also included are three "Comedy Central Quickies" (funny clips). One for "Primetime Glick", one for "South Park", and one for "Crank Yankers."
Final Thoughts:
I'd be hard pressed not to give "The Best of Primetime Glick" DVD my seal of approval. With over 2 hours of Glick, plus very good audio/video, and extras… all at a reasonable MSRP of $14.99, there is no reason you shouldn't own this DVD if you're a fan of the show. As a result, this gets a strong "Recommended" from yours truly.
