Entourage - The Movie Blu-ray Review

Entourage: The Movie picks up after the ending of the HBO series and brings back the cast of characters from the Entourage series: Vince (Adrian Grenier), Eric (Kevin Connolly), Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon), Turtle (Jerry Ferrara), and Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven). Ari Gold is no longer working as an agent for Vince. Ari Gold has become the head of a movie studio which is funding Vince's big-budget directorial debut Hyde. The production of Hyde is over-budget and needs more funding to finish it. Entourage: The Movie is produced by Mark Wahlberg (who was the loose inspiration for the series).

Ari Gold must figure out a way to get the rest of the budget needed for the film and must go to some of the financiers in a Texas production partnership with Larsen McCredle (Billy Bob Thornton) and son Travis McCredle (Haley Joel Osment). A screening of the film needs to happen for the financing to be finalized but drama behind the scenes causes delays on Hyde. Vince ends up producing DVD's of the film and Travis McCredle decides he not only doesn't like Hyde as a film but that Vince's brother Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon), who has a part in the film, should be completely cut out.

Vince's "entourage" of friends continues to try and support his career and directorial debut while going to parties and events. Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon) auditions for new roles after having faced the cancellation of his animated sitcom. Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) begins a relationship with Ronda Rousey. Eric (Kevin Connolly) is no longer with Sloan (Emmanuelle Chriqui) but the relationship is one that takes a turn again as they go to parenting classes together (as Sloan is going to have their child). Ari continues to support Vince's career while also juggling couple's therapy with Mrs. Ari (Perrey Reeves) and helping with the upcoming wedding of his former assistant Lloyd (Rex Lee).

<>Entourage: The Movie contains appearances by recurring characters from Entourage, including Shauna (Debi Mazer), Billy Walsh (Rhys Coiro), and Dana Gordon (Constance Zimmer). Some Entourage guest-stars (such as Bob Saget and Gary Busey) also appear in the film. The film also contains an assortment of cameos from Hollywood celebrities, including Liam Neeson, Andrew Dice Clay, Pharrell Williams, Kelsey Grammer, Mark Wahlberg, David Spade, Warren Buffett, Jon Favreau, Jessica Alba, Common, Armie Hammer, Judy Greer, and others. Entourage: The Movie has a glossy and higher production-budget with excellent cinematography by Steven Fierberg (Entourage), production design by Chase Harlan (Entourage), and costume designs by Olivia Miles (Entourage). The film is a reunion for the production team behind-the-scenes of the Entourage series as well as for the cast. The effort done by the crew is strong and aids the Hollywood style and big-budget production aspect of the film.

The Entourage film is written and directed by series creator Doug Ellin. The screenplay is unfortunately a bit disjointed and the film ends up feeling more like a brief mini-season of the show done with a higher production budget and filled with as many cameos as possible than an entirely proper film sequel. There are elements of the Entourage film which feel satisfactory and will please fans of the series but the film is less focused than it should have been. The result of the filmmaking is a somewhat messy follow-up to the series which is actually less satisfying than the ending given to the actual series. The film takes some steps back in storytelling while attempting to be as "big" of a film version as possible. Unfortunately, the transition isn't as smooth as fans might hope for and the storytelling isn't as solid as it could be. It's unfortunate the film was not made on the same level of quality as the series.

Though the Entourage film is an imperfect one (and a bit of a disappointment compared to the quality of the series and it's superior finale), fans will nonetheless want to check it out to see the cast of characters again. The film has some rewarding moments for fans and is worth checking out. It's great getting to revisit the characters of Vince, Eric, Johnny Drama, Turtle, and Ari Gold.

The Blu-ray:

Video:

Entourage: The Movie arrives on Blu-ray with an impressive 1080p MPEG-4 AVC presentation in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.40:1 widescreen. This is a strong high definition presentation with great color reproduction, clarity, and detail. The video quality is superb without issues of banding, DNR, or other issues. This is a pleasing presentation of the film.

Audio:

Entourage: The Movie is presented in 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. This is a reasonably engaging surround mix which well implements the sound effects and music into the presentation. The clarity of the lossless audio presentation is strong. Dialogue reproduction is excellent.

French, Spanish, and Portuguese 5.1 Dolby Digital audio presentations are provided on this release. Optional subtitles are provided in English SDH (for the deaf and hard of hearing), Spanish, French, and Portuguese.

Extras:

This release is a Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy Combo Pack.

The Gang: Still Rockin' It (14 min.) is a sit-down interview session with cast members Vince (Adrian Grenier), Eric (Kevin Connolly), Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon),Turtle (Jerry Ferrara), and Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven), along with series creator Doug Ellin as they discuss the series and transitioning into making the feature film.

Hollywood, Baby! (8 min.) is a behind-the-scenes making of featurette with interviews about the Hollywood aspect of the Entourage filmmaking with regards to filmmaking, cameo appearances, and more.

The Making of Hyde (5 min.) is a sort of spoof mini-documentary on the making of the film Hyde (directed by Vince).

Deleted Scenes (19 min.) contains an assortment of alternate and extended scenes cut from the final film.

Meet the Newest Member of Entourage (2 min.) is an interview with Doug Ellin's son about being in the film.

Lucas Ellin is Jonah Gold (2 min.) is another featurette about Doug Ellin's son being in the Entourage film.

Gag Reel (3 min.) features comedic outtakes with the cast.

Final Thoughts:

Entourage: The Movie is a decent if imperfect follow-up to the HBO television series. The film isn't as focused or strong in the storytelling department as it should be but it's still nice to have the characters of Vince, Eric, Johnny Drama, Turtle, and Ari Gold back together again. As for the quality of the Blu-ray release, Warner Bros. has released Entourage: The Movie with an excellent high-definition presentation and a small selection of extras. Entourage fans should check it out (even if the film is not as good as it could have been).

Recommended.
