American Wedding
The summer of 2003 has been oddly empty...empty of absurd teen comedies. Not that I'm complaining. I'll take zombie-infested England over horny hijacks any day, but this week it's all about the final installment of the American Pie franchise: American Wedding.
American Wedding is not as clever as the original, but its humor is nearly identical, and I guess that's what counts for movies like this. As in the previous films, Jim Levinstein finds himself in one embarrassing sexual situation after another starting with the moment he proposes to "band camp" girlfriend Michelle, and continuing to their wedding day.
Absent are the characters played by Mena Suvari, Natasha Lyonne, Shannon Elizabeth, and Chris Klein; but Finch and Kevin are back to ensure Jim and Michelle's wedding is a success. "Loveable" foul-mouthed jerk Steve Stifler also returns, and in typical form, he manages to interfere with every major aspect of the wedding. But, when Stifler sets his sights on Michelle's younger sister Cadence, everyone is in for a surprise.
Though Stifler is an appalling character, he is the most original and most "entertaining" thing about American Wedding which is mainly populated with bland supporting characters and stereotypes. Seann William Scott holds nothing back, and it is his performance that keeps this film afloat. Stifler's "dance off" in a gay bar and the bachelor party scene will no doubt be recounted as "F'in RAD" in frat houses nationwide.
All in all, American Wedding is the quintessential third film. Though some of its original cast members have grown up and moved on, the horny n' hilarious spirit of the original film survives to please crotch-and-poop-joke loving audiences nationwide. Me, I'm waiting for the alternate ending where the zombies show up at eat everyone.
