Sesame Street: Celebrate Family
I learned early on as the father of a newborn that the magic of Sesame Street is real. Look, everyone tells you that you should limit your child's exposure to television and we do that in our home, but sometime you've got to do meal prep for said child and be focused on it, and showing your little one how Big Bird, Bert, Ernie and Oscar roll.
"Celebrate Family" shows the young one in your house five separate stories that highlight families in various contexts; new (or at least recent) character Abby has dinner at Elmo's house and watches his family work to make dinner, and we see Elmo's Dad. Cookie Monster and his mother have some time as the former tries to figure out a last-minute Mother's Day gift, and Abby meets her new stepbrother.
Perhaps one of the things that makes Sesame Street such a long-standing tool in the family toolbox is that it doesn't overcomplicate matters for young minds. Each of the episodes show a simple and relatable matter for young viewers, and pragmatically shows them why it may be different, and why it is probably okay to work through. More important than most, it's that family, regardless of what shape it is in, is important and should be something that helps each member in it. It doesn't preach, it just…is.
With "Celebrate Family," the Sesame Workshop not only does that, but also the title kind of serve as an inspiration for the mom and Dad in the house too. The material doesn't explain why it is because it doesn't have to; the character behavior comes naturally and thus (regardless of family structure) makes you appreciate the characters and show all the more so, and reminds you of not only why YOU liked it as a young one, but your kids will probably do the same.
The Disc:The Video:
Everything is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen consistent with its (presumed) original broadcast presentations. It doesn't appear that any image processing was done to these episodes, no DNR or haloing that distracts from viewing, and colors look natural.
The Sound:Two-channel Dolby stereo, which is all you should expect given the source material. Dialogue is clear, music segues are clean and past that…it sounds OK.
The Extras:You get family related episodes from Sesame Street ("Siblings"), Elmo's World ("Families") and a Sesame Studios song ("Marvie's Song for Dad") along with the other material.
Final Thoughts:Sesame Street Celebrate Family isn't leaps and bounds over a lot of modern storytelling for children, but it does reinforce the merits of why everyone in and around Hooper's Place are such wonderful characters by doing a lot with simple gestures and words. You may have gripes over the technical stuff but I don't think you'll watch the whole thing, you're going to want to get stuff done while your children watch, and the extra segments are a nice inclusion. Definitely a key part of your parenting resources.
