Review:
Movie:
Sex and the City is the award-winning HBO comedy series starring Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw, columnist), Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones, public relations executive), Kristin Davis (Charlotte York, art dealer), and Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes, lawyer), all of which are single thirty-something woman in New York City. Chris Noth (Mr. Big, a wealthy business tycoon) also shows up from time to time as a love interest.

This two disc DVD set contains these episodes, which comprises the entire first season and last roughly 25 minutes each: "Sex and the City", "Models and Mortals", "Bay Of Married Pigs", "Valley of The Twenty-Something Guys", "The Power of Female Sex," "Secret Sex," "Monogamy," "Three's a Crowd," "The Turtle and the Hare," "The Baby Shower," The Drought," and "Oh, Come All Ye Faithful."

Each episode follows Carrie as she "researches" and writes about various sexual topics for her column, "Sex and the City," a chronicle of the single life in New York. A few of the topics covered in the first season of twelve episodes include: having sex like men, modelizers (men who only date models), dating younger men, married vs. single people, keeping sex secret, monogamy, threesomes, pregnancy, vibrators, and celibacy. Her friends also appear every episode, to either provide their opinions or recent experience on each research topic.

Being new to Sex and the City, I found it to be quite enjoyable. The frankness of the topics and conversations that take place during the episodes caught me off guard at first, but the "openness" of the show is what really sets it apart from other sitcoms. The episodes are loosely strung together with only a few minor plot points carrying over; the women all seem to be with a new guy every episode, for the exception of Skipper and Mr. Big who show up from time to time.

Picture:
Sex and the City is presented in full frame, as it was originally aired on HBO. The first episode in particular is noticeably grainy, and contains a few instances of shimmer; however, as the series moves along, the picture gets better with less grain. The colors throughout the series are excellent, with vibrant colors and good flesh tones.

Sound:
Sex and the City is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0. It has a great musical score that sounds wonderful, definitely one of the highlights of the series. The dialogue is also clean and clear.

Extras:
The extras for Sex and the City are accessible from either disc, and include: "Inside Sex and the City," a promotional featurette which runs about four minutes; bios for the 5 main cast members and the filmmaker; a five page text list of the awards and nominations the series has garnered; a television spot titled "Research," which runs about 30 seconds; and some DVD-ROM links. Each episode also contains a short text summary and the option of watching its preview spot. Also worth mentioning are the nice animated menus, which are terrific.

Summary:
For fans of the series, this is a must get DVD package, as it contains the entire first season at a reasonable price and a few extras as an added incentive. For newcomers, be warned that Sex and the City isn't for everyone; with its somewhat taboo topics and frank sexual dialogue. However those not easily offended should give it a spin; you will find an enjoyable and refreshing new comedy series from HBO. Highly Recommended.
