The Movie

The character Jimmy Neutron first appeared in the feature film Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius, which was basically a lead-in to the Nickelodeon show The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, in which each episode contains two brief (about 12 minutes) segments. As they are often want to do, Nickelodeon recently aired a slightly longer episode of the show, which is now available on DVD as Jimmy Neutron -- Jet Fusion.

To recap the movie and TV show, Jimmy Neutron (voiced by Debi Derryberry) is a young genius. Despite his short stature and big hair, Jimmy loves to invent things and often solves problems using his "enormous brain". Jimmy lives with his parents (voiced by Megan Cavanagh & Mark De Carlo), and his very eccentric father is obsessed with ducks. Carl (voiced by Rob Paulsen), a slow-witted boy who loves llamas, and Sheen (voiced by Jeffrey Garcia), who is crazy about "Ultra Lord" action figures, are Jimmy's best friends. The shows uses colorful computer generated animation to bring its characters to life. As Operation: Rescue Jet Fusion opens, Jimmy and his pals have just seen the new film "Die Again Tomorrow Forever", starring Jimmy's favorite on-screen secret agent, Jet Fusion (voiced by Christian Slater). The next day at school, the BTSO (Big Top-Secret Organization) (led by Commander Baker, voiced by Michael Clarke Duncan) contact Jimmy and asks for his help in locating their top agent, Agent X. So, Jimmy, Carl, and Sheen set out to find Agent X. They soon run into a female agent named Beautiful Gorgeous (voiced by Wendie Malick) and then learn that Agent X is actually Jet Fusion, who is an actor by day and an agent by night. Jimmy and Jet learn that they must stop Professor Calamitous (voiced by Tim Curry) from destroying the world.

Many of today's kid shows contain some references for adults, just in case they are forced to watch. But, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius is one of the few shows that is actually fun for both adults and kids, and Operation: Rescue Jet Fusion is one of the best yet. The Jet Fusion character is clearly an homage to James Bond and there are many Bond in-jokes in the show. And while the premise of Jimmy being tapped by the government is far-fetched, even for this show, it comes across as organic and the Jet Fusion and Gorgeous Beautiful characters work just fine. As usual, it's Carl and Sheen who steal the show, with Carl insisting that Jimmy having a theme-song, and Carl convinced that someone will be impressed by the fact that he can put his leg behind his head. Jimmy Neutron fans will love Operation: Rescue Jet Fusion, and the mini-movie is a good starting place for those who saw the film but were unsure of the TV show.

The DVD contains six bonus episodes from The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. "My Son, the Hamster" takes a cue from the 1958 version of The Fly, as Jimmy and Carl's hamster switch bodies (and heads) during an experiment gone awry. Frustrated at being the slowest in his class, Jimmy invents a pair of shoes that give him the ability to run way too fast in "See Jimmy Run". In what can only be called an odd tale of addiction, Jimmy invents the perfect candy, and everyone in town becomes obsessed with it in "Krunch Time". In "Safety First", Jimmy has been having some trouble with the school bully, so he uses nanobots to protect him, but they take their protection role too far. As with "See Jimmy Run", Jimmy tires of his inability to excel at baseball, so he uses science to create a super bat and glove in "The Retroville 9". And in "Grumpy Young Men", Jimmy, Carl, and Sheen long to be mature, but thanks to Jimmy's new invention, find themselves to be very old. All of these shows are quite entertaining, combining odd humor with vibrant animation.

Video

Jimmy Neutron -- Jet Fusion flies onto DVD courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment. The episodes included here are presented in their original 4:3 aspect ratio. The images are crystal clear, rivaling digital broadcast quality, and showing no grain. The computer animation used for The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius may not be Pixar quality, but it's still pleasing and highly detailed. The show features a range of dynamic colors and they all look fine here. The image does show some minor artifacting at times, but that is the only real defect here.

Audio

This DVD carries a Dolby Digital Stereo audio track. With b>Operation: Rescue Jet Fusion, the track is very lively, displaying constant stereo effects and generating some nice bass from the front speakers. As for the bonus episodes, the dialogue is always sharp and clear and there is no distortion. Stereo effects aren't as prevalent, but those present are used creatively.

Extras

The only extra feature on the DVD, aside from the "bonus episodes" is a still gallery, which features concept art from the show.

There are few shows which pre-adolescents and parents can watch together and enjoy, but The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius is that rare exception. Yes, the show does display some sassiness that some parents may not approve of, but it's hard to knock a show in which the hero uses his intellect and science to solve problems. Gotta blast!
