In the future, the whole world is controlled by 12 large corporations. Even governments are under the thumb of these powerful conglomerates. One of them, Ashurum, has been collecting people with psychic ability. Their latest acquisition is Kai, a quiet young man who is a pacifist at heart. Kai's young sister is very sick, and Ashurum is giving her the best of care while they train Kai.
Kai trains with five other young psychics, or E's, including Shen-lu a girl who is attracted to Kai, and her hot-headed brother Shen-lon. Shen-lon takes an immediate dislike to Kai and the two become rivals.
Ashurum has created this group in order to protect other psychics, who are feared and hunted throughout the world. Or so they claim. While that's a good story to tell the young E's, Ashurum is only using the psychics for their own ends. Their ultimate goal is still not known, but it seems fairly neferious.
This was an enjoyable show, but not outstanding. While the plot is interesting enough, there wasn't much original here. The evil corporation, the powerful but duped psychics and the noble rebels have all been done before.
The characters are also a little bit too two-dimensional for my tastes. Kai is pure as snow with untapped abilities that he doesn't even suspect who only wanting to help people. Shen-lu is the plucky girl who only thinks of Kai, and Shen-lon is the mean bully who wants to kill all normal humans. I actually found Shen-lon much more interesting than the other characters since there seems to be solid reasons why he is so aggressive and violent.
Like most anime that is put out nowadays, this disc offers the choice of a stereo Japanese track with optional English subtitles or an English dub in 5.1. I alternated between tracks as I watched the show, and I had a slight preference for the original language track, but thought the English dub was fine. The English track was a more full, but the Japanese track wasn't flat at all. Both tracks sounded fine, with no distortion or other defects.
The full frame video quality for this DVD was good. There is some aliasing in the background and some of the fine lines shimmer, but this is a minor issue. The colors are bright and the lines are tight. A very nice DVD.
Extras on this disc include a non-credit opening and closing, an art gallery of production sketches, Japanese promo spots, and a series of previews.
This was a good show, but not outstanding. Most of the plot elements
are things that have been done before but the show wasn't boring.
A fairly average program, but one that's still worth watching. Recommended.
