Madonna: Music
List Price: Unknown [Buy now and save at Amazon]
The Movie:
Coming before her new album, Madonna's new single has realized the potential of the DVD format with this new DVD single. But have they taken advantage of the capabilities of the format? Personally, I don't think so.
The video is a cute bit with Madonna and her friends having a fun night on the town, even with some nicely done animated segements thrown in in-between. The song is somewhat catchy, but it's not quite as sharp or fun as recent songs like "Beautiful Stranger", from the "Austin Powers" soundtrack.
In a time where the format can offer audio commentary, documentaries and much more (see what Criterion is doing with the upcoming Beastie Boys DVD) there certainly could have been things done to make this more than a "single". They call it a "DVD Single" and that's simply what it is - 2 versions of the song and a web - link, no more, no less. Certainly, a small documentary could have been prepared how the animated segement was done, commentary from the video's director, etc. A message from Madonna telling us what to expect from her new album? A number of promotional items and just plain fun things for her fans could have been included.
For fans of Madonna, they certainly might enjoy this DVD Single, but more could have been done with the presentation.
The DVD
VIDEO: The image quality of the video is outstanding, with perfect sharpness, excellent detail and remarkable clarity. Colors are bold, bright and beautiful on this presentation as well, looking well-saturated and showing no problems at all. I saw no instances of shimmering, pixelation or any other problems. Most of the video is full frame, although some parts are letterboxed.
SOUND: Here's another part where I was somewhat dissapointed. The sound is in stereo, which is fine, but I would have really enjoyed hearing the video remixed in Dolby Digital 5.1. The sound as is is very good, sounding crisp, clear and with solid bass.
MENUS:: A nicely animated main menu with beats from the song playing in the background.
EXTRAS:: Web-link.
Final Thoughts: For fans of Madonna, "Music" is recommended, but I still think more could have been included with the DVD.
