The Movie:

"Fled" is loud, silly and not terribly bright or even unintentionally entertaining. Starring Laurence Fishburne and Stephen Baldwin as two convicts who find themselves on the run after a prison break they didn't mastermind, the movie goes over the same terrain as many before it, and there isn't much that's at all fresh this time out.

The two convicts are chained together before the break, and find themselves on the run and hating each other. Much of the opening is devoted to the two running and hitting each other. Once they get back to civilization, they become friends with a woman (Salma Hayek) who've they've just held up. And yes, there's more than that. Dodge(Baldwin) was sent to jail for being a computer hacker; the disc that he has would be very valuable to quite a few criminals who want to see him dead.

At least the opening seems somewhat promising, another "action-comedy". Unfortunately, that possibility goes downwards as the film gets increasingly more violent as it goes on. Where it could have gone for fun and laughs, the violence is a bit much at times, and gets tiring. More is revealed about the story in little twists that, in another, better movie, might have proved more entertaining.

Baldwin and Fishburne aren't bad together at least at the opening. The biggest suprise is Will Patton of "Armageddon", who is able to almost construct a decently realized character all by his own. It would be great if he could have had more of a role here. Overall, "Fled" is a pretty lame attempt at an action film. The plot itself is nothing new, but a fresh screenplay could have made for a better picture.

The DVD

VIDEO: "Fled" was shot quite well by cinematographer Matthew Leonetti ("Strange Days", "Star Trek: Insurrection") and his solid work combined with some nice looking locations makes for a visually pleasing (if not pleasing in any other way) film. Thankfully, MGM/UA provides an excellent 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer that looks solid throughout. Sharpness is at least good through the majority of the film, and at times excellent. Detail is very good as well, and clarity is never lacking, even in dimly lit sequences.

There were very few problems throughout the presentation - the only thing I noticed was some very slight pixelation on a handful of occasions and one or two minor marks on the print used. None of the flaws are the least bit distracting, and I thought much of the film looks great. Colors are especially solid; the film offers many bold colors that look particularly well-saturated and without flaw here.

This is solid work from MGM, and I only wish the film could be as good as it looks visually.

SOUND: As with any good fugitive movie, there are quite a few moments with helicopters going overhead, which makes for some enjoyable audio moments. The film is, of course, essentially one long chase scene, so there are a bunch of other intense moments involving gunfire and car chases. Surrounds are agressively used to put the audience in the middle of the action, whether in a gunfight or during the film's many chases. Bass is solid if not spectacular, and the front speakers deliever solid work, and all of it provides a good sense of dimension and space. Dialogue is clear and easily heard, never becoming overshadowed by anything else in the sound.

MENUS:: Very basic images from the film make up the main and sub-menus. Nothing too interesting.

EXTRAS: The trailer.

Final Thoughts: The DVD from MGM is actually pretty good, with fine video and audio quality. The film is pretty poor though, and isn't even worth a rental.
