The DVD
VIDEO: The image quality for the DVD isn't quite as remarkable as the sound quality is, but I still have to say that I was quite pleased with the final product. The image is full-frame, but I have to say that I only found a few very minor instances of artifacts, and they weren't distracting. Sharpness throughout the presentation is terrific, and so is detail. The concert also is quite colorful at times, and colors look beautiful. Aside from a few small flaws, I was very pleased. The layer change is at about one hour and two minutes into the show and doesn't happen during a song thankfully - it's during an interview.
SOUND: I have a lot to say about the sound quality that this disc presents (they're all good), so let me get into the discussion. First off, this is the first title from BMG that sports DTS audio, and let me be the first to congratulate them on a fabulous sounding DVD. It also has Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, and I'll talk more about that in a moment. I must also say that I am more than pleased with how the audio on concert DVDs has evolved and become better and better with almost each new release. After listening to the recent "James Brown Live" and this release, I am pleased to say that concert DVDs are sounding more and more professional and bringing the listener further into the experience.
I was slightly worried at first how this DVD would sound, since there have been some previous performances that have been broadcast on TV that come to DVD in surround sound that come off sounding rather flat. It's in surround sound for sure, but I just don't feel that the audio quality itself is anything that remarkable. But when I put this DVD in, the pleasing sound quality jumped right out from the begining.
The differences between the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio and the DTS audio I felt were noticeable; the DTS seems not hugely, but noticably deeper and richer. Detail and clarity is improved and the DTS version seems to fill the room and envelop the listener further. Not that the Dolby Digital version was not good, but I felt that the DTS version is an improvement over it.
The concert in general sounds fantastic; vocals come through with remarkable clarity and the music has a big, dynamic feel that really got me into the concert. Surrounds are used for both crowd noise and music, but it works - their use is tasteful and it works - the room really comes alive with the music many times during the show.
All in all, I really liked the sound quality (especially the DTS audio) on this DVD and this as well as the recent "James Brown" DVD really have me excited for the next wave of concert DVD releases.
MENUS:: A nicely animated main menu with song clips playing in the background.
EXTRAS:: What really sets this disc apart are the great extra features:
Rehearsal Footage: Here, we get to see Santana and band warming up for the concert. It lasts for about 6 minutes or so, and is actually presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.
Music Video: Music videos for "Corazon Espinado", "Smooth", "Put Your Lights On" and "Maria Maria".
Supernatural Featurette: A very enjoyable and informative promotional featurette that talks about Santana's latest album, and offers interviews with all involved. About 8 1/2 minutes total.
Text: Song Lyrics, Program and Album Credits, Santana Bio and Fan Club info.
And: An audio interview with Santana that also has a photo gallery - the interview is in the background while photos go by.
Final Thoughts: A lot of thoughts to offer; one - praise to BMG for their first DTS offering, which sounds great. Second, these DVD concerts can really serve as a fantastic way to become interested in an artist's music. I didn't know much about Santana beyond the recent hits, but after watching this, I'm going to investigate his work further.
