Beach Party

The Movie:
Hilarious. I'd never really seen any of the "beach party" movies of the 60's, but if they have dialogue this funny, I may have to check out the rest of them. The film stars Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello as a couple of crazy kids who are headed down to the beach to have a little sun and fun. When they get there, Avalon's character finds out that his dream date has invited the rest of her friends along for the ride. So they can't have any time together. What a bummer, man.
The film really doesn't contain much of a plot at all. We get some dialogue from the main characters about the situation, then everyone goes into a musical number. There's even a professor on the beach who is studying those "crazy kids" for his research.
The film is simply silly fun, no more - no less, and the fact that the actors could recite this dialogue without laughing is even more impressive. For fans of 60's comedy, the "Beach Party" DVD might be worth a look.
The DVD
VIDEO: I have mixed, but mostly positive feelings about MGM's new anamorphic transfer for "Beach Party", which is now about 36 years old. The picture certainly shows some flaws from age, but these seem very isolated to certain spots during the film. At its best, this looks remarkably good for a movie of this age.
Sharpness is quite good, with only occasional shots looking a bit on the soft side. Detail is solid, and clarity is never lacking. One might expect the print used to show some wear, but I never really felt that it did. Sure, there are the occasional marks and slight scratches, but not as many as I'd expected to see. A slight bit of grain appears in a scene or two, but remains hardly noticable. I found a couple of slight instances of pixelation and shimmer, but these were very brief.
Colors are also respectable. With all of the bright, bold colors of the outfits of the beachgoers, the film is visually nice looking. Colors don't show any signs of fading, and don't have any problems.
Some flaws and wear - and not the best looking presentation I've seen from a film of its age, but still not bad, either. A nice job from MGM - offered are the film's widescreen 2.35:1 presentation (anamorphic) and the full-frame edition.
SOUND: Hey everyone, it's 60's mono! Sorry, just trying to get into the spirit of the movie. The mono audio is decent but not great, sounding quite flat and some of the sound effects are occasionally harsh. The music by Dick Dale and the Del Tones still sounds cool today, but I would have liked for it to sound better on this DVD, where it comes through sounding thin. Dialogue isn't bad, sounding clear and easily heard. A decent mono track.
MENUS:: Menus are non-animated, with very basic images serving as backgrounds.
EXTRAS: As with almost all of the rest of the catalog titles from MGM that they've released lately, the only extra is the trailer.
Final Thoughts: If you're a fan of silly, old-school "hip" comedy from the 60's, "Beach Party" is the movie for you.
