THE MOVIE

Thanks to the advancement of computer effects over the past years, it is now possible to make low-budget "B" movies that come out looking pretty good. Such is the case with Xenon Pictures direct-to-video release of Baberellas.

Loaded with computer effects that aren't up to network TV quality, but are at least as good as most video games, Baberellas doesn't spend too much time trying to make a story that is interesting or logical. The goal of the movie is to provide some sexy eye-candy for the home viewer, and in that respect, Baberellas achieves what it sets out to do.

Shauna O'Brien stars as "Queen Sartanika", ruler of the universe who uses a TV Show named "Plunder That Planet" to drain the sexual energy from the inhabitants and provide fuel for her starship. The planet chosen for this week's show? Earth!

The Queen focuses her attention on an all-girl band named "Top Heavy" (no bonus points for guessing why they're called that!), and she determines that one member of the band has more sexual energy than anyone else on Earth…but she must determine which one of the four it is. By manipulating the girls' actions, Sartanika puts them into various sexual situations (i.e. rubbing lotion on each other or frolicking by a pool) so she can figure out which girl holds the most sexual energy.

Visually, Baberellas provides the kind of softcore action that fans will be looking for. Where it fails, however, is in the humor department. The movie wants to be a sexual spoof – but all of its attempts at laughter fall short.

THE DVD

Video:
Baberellas is presented in the full-frame 4:3 format, and the quality of the picture is just average for a DVD release. There's no obvious pixilation problems, but the film lacks the overall sharpness one would expect on this format for such a recently made movie.

Audio:
There's a lot of music in Baberellas, so I was kind of surprised that the audio is only presented in 2.0 Dolby – since a 5.1 track would have made the overall movie a little more enjoyable for the viewer. Then again, most of the music and songs in this title are pretty lame (how many times are you going to want to listen to a song entitled "Kiss My Galaxy"?!), so it's probably all for the better. Overall, very run-of-the-mill audio.

Extras:
For a B-movie, I was impressed with the effort that went into the bonus material on this DVD. For starters, we get a 4-minute Behind The Scenes featurette that is mostly made up of raw footage taken in between scenes. We also get the Trailer for this film, plus four other Xenon releases; a Casting Calls segment (which shows various girls trying out for the film); a 49-image Photo Gallery; a Music Video; 4 Deleted Scenes from the movie; and a featurette called Swimming Pool, which is footage of the women frolicking around in a pool with "Baberella Fun Facts" appearing on the bottom half of the screen.

Also included in the bonus material is a .pdf file of the Movie Poster for those who want to prink up a copy; plus a Direct Reponse Ad which is a TV ad on how you can order this film...which I guess is thrown on the DVD for those who may have rented it and want to buy their own copy.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Although I wouldn't label Baberellas a "success", it does achieve its main goal: to provide the home viewer with some quality footage of some beautiful women in various states of undress. I'm not sure all the attention paid to special effects was worth the effort by the filmmakers, but it does make Baberellas one of the better-looking B-movies you'll find on the market, and one that is certainly worth a rental if you're looking for a mindless night of eye candy.
