Tony Bennett's New York
List Price: Unknown [Buy now and save at Amazon]
Although it seems more like a concert from Tony Bennett, this is more a look at the singers from Bennett's era as well as New York in general, with concert footage from Bennett in-between. Songs include: 1. I Left My Heart In San Francisco ,2. For Once In My Life, 3. Just In Time, 4. Rags To Riches, 5. I Got Rhythm, 6. A Foggy Day and a number of other songs.
We also get to hear from fellow musicians who talk about the talent that Bennett has and the classic way that he's able to entertain audiences. Although I'm not really a fan of the singer, the presentation really is quite informative, taking the viewer through the history of Bennett's career through older footage and narration that lets the audience know about the changes that music has gone through over the years. We also get to hear from Bennett himself, who recalls those who have inspired him. A very well-done program.
The DVD
VIDEO: The quality of the full-frame presentation varies quite a bit. The actual concert footage itself is a bit soft looking, but remains clear and at least crisp, with good detail and enjoyable colors. It's some of the additional footage about New York and Bennett's life that sometimes suffers, with one or two instances of pixelation, and as one might expect, some of the older footage has some marks, scratches, etc. But the concert footage itself looks consistently good. Some flaws, but the main part of the program looks solid.
SOUND: The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is not a showy presentation like some of the concert DVDs that I've had a chance to review, but it's almost pleasing in its subtle nature. The majority of the soundtrack is based from the front, but the surrounds do provide some additional support for the information that's provided by the front speakers.
Audio quality for the main concert footage is enjoyable, but this doesn't seem like a major production similar to Image's new James Brown DVD. Quality never goes into sounding thin, but doesn't quite reach a warmth or smoothness that we hear from new concert releases, either.
MENUS:: Basic, non-animated menus that are nicely done, showing various images of Bennett.
EXTRAS:: Biography.
Final Thoughts: Fans of the singer will enjoy the combination of an insightful look at the history of the singer along with concert footage.
