The Movie:

The adventures of Geomon and his friends come to an end with this fifth volume of Legend of the Mystical Ninja.  This final DVD includes four episodes that do a fairly good job of wrapping the series up.

The first two shows on this DVD are stand along episodes.  In each one Mudanashi ends up pulling some stunt to get the rage globe filling in another attempt to open the dimensional gateway to let his master Makuamuuge through to conquer our world.  Goemon and Impact come to the rescue as usual.  The last pair of shows is the climactic two part episode where Tsukasa and Mudanashi end up getting shot into space aboard the first Japanese space shuttle.  I really disliked some aspects of these episodes.  The show just got way to silly at the end.  I could barely suspend my disbelief as a student on a school tour accidently gets loaded on the space shuttle but the part where Mudanashi makes a space station transform (ala Transformers) into a robot was just too stupid.  The show goes over the top and gets really dumb too many times in these last shows.  If you though some of the earlier episodes were bad, just wait until you see this ending.

The show has the same feel throughout the series.  If you enjoyed the first volume, you'll like the rest.  If, on the other hand, you didn't care for the beginning episodes, best bail while you are ahead, because the show doesn't get much better over time.

The DVD:

Audio:

The audio for this DVD was fairly standard.  Both the English dub and the original Japanese soundtrack were in stereo and sounded clean.  There wasn't any hiss or distortion, but there wasn't a lot of bass either.  The loud explosions and battle scenes didn't have a lot of impact, but I wasn't rally expecting a children's show to by really dynamic.

Video:

As with the other volumes in this series, the video quality on this DVD was pretty good overall, although it was a little soft.  The full frame image was clean without any specks or dirt, and the colors were fairly bright.  There was some aliasing in the program, but these digital defects were minor.  The image was a little soft but not overly so.

Extras:

As with the other DVDs in this series, there are some nice extras included. This time around the cast interview has the players talking about what they like about acting in the show.  They also discuss the wide variety of foley noises that they had to make for the show, all of the brunts and odd noises that are made when a character falls or gets hit.
There is also a cast commentary on episode 21. For this track director Scott McClennon joins actress Tiffany Grant, who plays Tsukasa, and Actor Vic Mignogna, who voices Goemon. I enjoyed the commentary track that this trio did for the last volume, and this is a good track too.  The tone is still was more sedate and calm than most anime commentaries, which was nice.  These three did a fairly good job commenting on what they say on the screen.

There are also trailers to Saint Seiya, Final Fantasy: Unlimited, Full Metal Panic, Steam Detectives, Slayers Return, and Original Dirty Pair.

Final Thoughts:

I like children's anime in general, but this show never appealed to me very much.  I thought the humor was lame and the action fairly dull.  The shows were predictable and the writing incredibly uninspired.  I have to hand it to the English voice cast though, they did a very good job with the voices and seemed to be having a great time with the characters.  Even so, I can easily say that this is the worst series that I've seen so far this year.  Skip it.
