BAD MOON

Synopsis:

In the jungles of Nepal a non-descript scientist is investigating non-descript flora/fauna for a non-descript scientific agency. While there he is attacked by a Werewolf and suffers the curse of Lycanthropy himself. Fast forward to the USA, where we find the same scientist living in an Airstream trailer in a very scenic Washington state-esque locale. After several grisly murders are discovered in the timberline area…ie..Washington state-esque locale, the man-beast decides to give his sister-Mariel Hemmingway a call. She lives in the boonies and has a beautiful house all by herself in this scenic wooded locale. She lives quite comfortably with her son and dog, Thor. Thor by the way is the best part of the film. Anyway back to our story. So, sister who has no name invites her brother who also has no name for an extended stay at her home. Thor isn't faked out for one minute. He can sense the difference in her brother and can even smell the wolf in him. So the film quickly dissolves into a battle of wits between Wolfman and German Sheppard! Now I know it sounds hokey but trust me, this one is worth a look-see!

Audio:

The audio is a nicely remastered 5.1 platform. The fronts are pretty loud however; the rears have almost no effect whatsoever. There are a lot of effects in this film both visual and aural. The aural ones however, could stand a bit of a touch up. The soundtrack IMHO is rather aggressive but, with the lack of support from the rears, it leaves the soundstage somewhat empty. The center is clean and the dialogue well delineated. The fronts are active and provide a decent audio experience. The sub could have been used far more effectively and the absence of any real rear presence causes me to rate the audio a fairly dismal 2 stars.

Video:

The Video is an incredibly clean presentation that shines with clarity. The blacks are deep, the flesh tones are accurate and the colors are lush and inviting. There were a couple of scratches in the print and one or two instances when a hint of pixellation poked through in only the darkest scenes. Overall, the picture presented was extremely pleasing with only those minor moments of dissatisfaction.

Extras:

This movie made $0 at the box office and as such, the supplemental materials are non-existent. The trailer for the film is included as well as 6 trailers for other Morgan Creek productions. Speaking of the trailer, this has to be one of the worst trailers I have ever seen! It's dripping with unintentional hokum and it's positively a stinker of the first class!

Overall:

I have to admit, I had my doubts about Bad Moon but, after watching the film, I will admit that it does have some merit. It's nowhere near anything that's classic viewing around this time of year, (think Universal Monsters Collection) but it does have a charm all it's own. The transformation from man to beast is Ok. Not awesome or "Wow" but decent. When I think of good Werewolf films, I have to give the nod to The Howling the first not the awful sequels, An American Werewolf in London, Curse of the Werewolf Oliver Reed is incredible and everyone's favorite Larry Talbot, Lon Chaney, Jr. in Universal's The Wolfman. Bad Moon doesn't in anyway come close to the genius of these films but it's a decent romp through the Wolf bane! Surprisingly enough, there are a decent amount of stingers that really worked well! Dialogue wise fuggedaboudit! The dialogue is so hokey at times it's laughable! The wolf well, he's pretty cool and his transformation scene is fairly decent. The moments rights before he changes however, I think are the best part of the film. Rin Tin Tin, uuumm, I mean Thor is pretty cool and a good looking dog at that. I would have thought differently but Bad Moon held me till the end! Definitely recommended!
