Wedding Peach - Angel Bell (Vol. 5)
This fifth volume of Wedding Peach is the first one that I've had a chance to see. At first glance the show seems to be a clone of Sailor Moon, but on closer examination....it still seems to be a take off on Sailor Moon. That's not to say that it is a bad show, just not something terribly creative or original.
Though this was my first exposure to Wedding Peach it was fairly easy to get figure out what is going on. In typical 'magical girl' show fashion, Momoko, Hinagiku, and Yuri are three young school girls who can transform into the magical super-heroes Wedding Peach, Angel Lily and Angel Daisy. As the Love Angels these three battle against the forces of darkness who would destroy love and kindness. When they are in their regular personas, they spend most of their time fighting over who will get to date the school hunk.
In this set of shows, the evil takes the from of a demon Igneous. He takes over the body of Takuro, a boy at the girl's school, and through him tries to discover the identity of the three Love Angels. Each show follows a familiar pattern: the girls argue about boys, and Igneous reminds Takuro to look for the Love Angels. When the devil senses love energy, he creates another monster, causing the Angels to emerge and fight. Triumphant at the end, the three girls continue to bicker about guys.
These five episodes were fun to watch, but they didn't really leave a lasting impression. After watching the show, I had a hard time remembering what happened in each episode. There were a few laughs, and each episode had a nice fight scene, but there wasn't much more to it than that. A pretty formalistic show, I found myself getting a little tired of the formula by the end of the DVD. Not a bad show, just not anything special.
The DVD:
Audio:
The audio for this DVD was fairly standard. Both the English dub and the original Japanese soundtrack were in stereo and sounded clean. There wasn't any hiss or distortion, but there wasn't a lot of bass either. I had a strong preference for the Japanese audio track, though there wasn't anything really wrong with the English dub. The original language track just sounded a little more appropriate; the voices seemed to fit the characters better.
Video:
The full frame video looked pretty good. The lines were a little soft, but the detail was fine. There was a little bit of aliasing, with the diagonal lines having a stair step effect. This is common with animated shows, but it never got distracting in this program. The colors were a little muted, but only slightly. Overall a good looking show.
Extras:
This disc has a clean opening and closing, as well as some trailers for other ADV DVDs.
Final Thoughts:
This was a good show, but nothing to get really excited about. If you enjoy magical girl shows, be sure to check this one out, because it is a lot of fun. Do to the formalistic nature of the show, I can't see myself rewatching this one a lot, so I recommend that anime fans run out and Rent It.
