Lep in the hood come to do no good...lep in the hood come to do no good...

Most people don't seem to be aware that there's a sequel to "Leprechaun". Um, and most people really don't seem to be aware that there are, in fact, four sequels. The series actually got better with each entry, as each film took itself less and less seriously and became increasingly bizarre. "Leprechaun 4: In Space" places somewhere in my top ten favorite movies of all time, so I had pretty high hopes when "Leprechaun In The Hood", the fifth Leprechaun movie, was announced.

"Leprechaun In The Hood" is about three rappers -- Postmaster P, Butch, and Stray Bullet -- trying to make it to the top, with a contest in Las Vegas sure to bring instant fame. After they accidentally destroy their equipment (a common theme in these sorts of movies? The same thing happened in "Thicker Than Water"), they raid the offices of a local gangsta rap mogul, Mack Daddy (played by Ice-T) and inadvertently release the leprechaun, whose treasures Mack Daddy stumbled upon years ago. The trio also make off with a magical golden flute, whose hypnotic powers are the base of Mack Daddy's success. So, the leprechaun is off to merrily reclaim his treasure and slay anyone who gets in his way, including Mack Daddy and the Ghostly Trio. (If their group has a name, I missed it during all three times I've watched this.) "Leprechaun In The Hood" isn't quite as zany or madcap as I make it sound.

The 'plus' column for "Leprechaun In The Hood" is pretty close to empty. Everything about it seems amateurish, and nearly all of the humor falls flat. I'm about as white as they come, so maybe there are some subtle nuances I can't appreciate since I know nothing about hip-hop culture. Then again, two of my college roommates watched it with me, and even though they're really into rap, they thought "Leprechaun In The Hood" sucked too. It's not completely worthless...there are a few entertaining moments (the leprechaun rapping, for instance), but it tries too hard to create likeable characters. A leprechaun movie should be about the leprechaun, darnit! Did anyone watch a "Friday the 13th" movie for character development? Hopefully if there's a sixth "Leprechaun", it'll be from the people who put together part four.

Video: For such a recent film, "Leprechaun In The Hood" is often rather grainy, and the image suffers from some frequent softness (probably due to an inept camera operator?). Clarity really isn't that great, and the colors seem somewhat dull. "Leprechaun In The Hood" looks disappointing by any standard, but especially so when compared to the great job Trimark did with "Leprechaun 2". This looks like a low-budget film from the late '80s, not something shot in '99. Oh, and it's letterboxed and isn't enhanced for widescreen televisions.

Audio: Not in "Ultra Stereo" like "Leprechaun 2", but the stereo track on "Leprechaun In The Hood" sounds about the same as Trimark's previous Leprechaun DVD release. As would be expected from a hip-hop heavy soundtrack, there's some decent bass range, although not quite as foundation-rocking as I'd hoped for. Dialogue sounds okay, with no hiss or distortion, but it doesn't have the polished, professional sound I'm used to from...well...everything else I've ever seen.

Supplements: Aside from a full-frame trailer for "Leprechaun In The Hood", the only other extras are the usual Trimark hidden trailers ("Leprechaun", "Leprechaun 2", "Warlock", "Warlock: The Armageddon", and "Warlock III: The End of Innocence").

Conclusion: By far, "Leprechaun In The Hood" is my least favorite of the five Leprechaun movies, and I'm one of those rare folks who'll admit to liking most of them. Fans might find it worth a rental, but I wouldn't recommend it as a purchase.
