The "Platinum Comedy Series," released on DVD by UrbanWorks Entertainment, has included some great comedy routines by top African-American comedians, including Steve Harvey ("One Man") and Dave Chappelle ("Killing 'Em Softly"). So, when Platinum Comedy Series: Cedric the Entertainer's "Starting Lineup" showed up in the DVD screener pool, I jumped on the chance to review a full set from the man I consider to be the funniest of the four "Original Kings of Comedy."

Here's the problem: Unlike the aforementioned Harvey and Chappelle discs, Starting Lineup features Cedric hosting a night of four other comics. And while Cedric's material is as funny as always, the inclusion of four smaller names make the disc feel more like an extended episode of "Def Comedy Jam."

Let's go through the comics:

Cedric the Entertainer: One of the funniest men in America, Cedric gets about 25 minutes on the disc to shine. There is little to no material on the disc that overlaps with Original Kings of Comedy, though it is referenced a few times (after dancing for a moment, he comes back with, "Damn, I'm tired. I'm a grown-ass man, dog.").

Roland Powell: Powell sums himself up nicely in his routine, saying, "I am ignorant, y'all." Has some funny material about fighting and the phrase "put yo' hands on me," being cheap and ends with a song about women at clubs (I bought you 'dem drinks/Bitch, you is my girlfriend").

Juan Villareal: He's funny because he's Hispanic, you see. He's also unable to get to a punch line without gratuitous profanity (and this coming from a George Carlin fan).

Tony Luewellyn: White-people-do-this-black-people-do-that. But his material about growing up in the south is great.

J.J.: Some very dated material ("I used to cheat so much, I'd write the name of the person I'm cheating from on my paper") drags down an otherwise very funny routine. A bit about roadkill might be the funniest non-Cedric bit on the disc.

There are some "sketches" during introductions for the comics that play off of the sports theme of the disc. It's hard to tell exactly what's going on; the video is a picture-in-picture box in the lower corner of the screen and the sound is distorted to the point of being unlistenable.

The DVD

Video:

Clearly shot on digital video, the transfer is nothing exceptional. There's some background video noise that likely comes from the source material being too dark. Also, there are some artifacts present in the cutaway footage.

Audio:

A Dolby 2.0 track is present and clear for the concert footage. The sound on the other footage (interstitial skits) would fail a basic film class.

Extras:

Trailers for much better discs are available, along with extended footage from the cutaway sketches. It looks like, from the extra footage, that there was another comic cut out of the final broadcast. I don't know how bad he had to be to be cut out, but he must have been as funny as a funeral.

Final Thoughts:

Clocking in at around 68 minutes (not the 75 minutes promised on the back cover) and without any extras of any value, there's no reason to purchase Platinum Comedy Series – Cedric the Entertainer's "Starting Lineup". But if you enjoy Cedric, it's worth a rental.
