Based on Tom Robbin's cult favorite novel the film - directed by Gus Van Sant feels like a book adaptation right down to the acting, which features a cast of colorful characters most of whom act as though they are reading the lines.

The basic story revolves around Sissy Hankshaw (Uma Thurman) a young woman born with big thumps who has the ability to control the universe- and traffic. She naturally becomes an outcast and reacts to it the only way a woman with big thumbs can react: she hitchhikes back and forth across the country.

As she grows older she is befriended by a cross-dressing businessman (over-the top John Hurt) who suggests she visit a cowgirl farm down in the Southwest. She heads down there and becomes one of the lesbian cowgirls. While there the cowgirls take over the ranch, kidnap a bunch of whooping cranes and demand that they [the girls not the cranes] get the rights to the ranch.

The film is very colorful and has a whole bunch of big name actors chewing scenery and line reading including Pat Morita, Keanu Reeves, Angie Dickinson, Lorraine Bracco, Ed Begley Jr, Crispin Glover, Heather Graham, Udo Kier and Buck Henry.

Video:
Presented in an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 the image looks excellent. Colors look good and the image looks sharp and glossy. The DVD is compatable for 16:9 televisions.

Audio:
Audio is in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, DTS Surround and Stereo Surround. It sounds great.

One trailer.. Overall: Even Cowgirls Get the Blues is a below par film from everyone involved. If interested then watch the DVD which looks and sounds good enough to make the movie at least worth looking at and listening to.
