The Show:

In the year 2023 crime is becoming increasingly sophisticated.  The underworld has high tech weapons that the police can't compete with.  To fight these tougher than average villains, the police has create a special elite squad that is authorised to take "excessive action."  Known as The Warriors this is the group consists of only three young ladies, but they can sure get the job done.  Their story starts in the first volume of Burn Up Scramble from Geneon.

This is actually a retooling of the previous Burn Up series; Burn Up Excess and Burn Up W.  There isn't any connection with the previous series.  This show starts off fresh and you don't need to have seen the earlier show, though there are some of the same faces we've seen previously.

The main member of the Warriors is Rio, a tall, young, buxom, gorgeous blond who is always short of cash and can't seem to get a date (which places this show firmly in the realm of fantasy.)  She's the muscle, prefering to take on a room of thugs by herself rather than waiting for backup.  Her backup comes in the form of Maya, a quite young girl who is a crack marksman.  She usually sets up on a rooftop and shoots the enemy from a safe distance away.

The crew is rounded out with Lilica, a girl of unusual power.  She's a psychic.  She can read a persons thoughts and past by touching them and can blow out lights just by walking past them, as well as other telepathy based powers.  These powers aren't well defined, and my greatest fear is that they'll give her new abilities whenever they need to get the girls out of a scrape.

All of the shows are stand alone episodes, where the team goes up against a group of criminals seemingly out numbered and/or outgunned.  Never fear though, because our intrepid Warriors prevail because of their superior skills and training.

This isn't my favorite show, though I like it better than Burn Up Excess.  The plots become very predictable quickly, and every episode feels the same by the end of the disc.  There are only so many times I can watch Rio single handedly take on a half dozen guys without getting hit once.

Not that this show is supposed to be taken seriously, it isn't.  It just isn't funny enough to stand as a comedy, and not realistic enough to succeed as an action show.   The comedy in the series didn't work very well for me.  It was just a little too stupid and it often involved having the characters do something that was out of character.  The time Maya stopped snipping in the middle of a battle to
talk on the cell phone is a prime example.

There's also a lot of fan service, though not as much as the previous shows.  The massive mammarys that the woman are given are always defying gravity in tight fitting suits or incredibly sexist police uniforms.  It seems that they are always bending over in front of the camera in their police issue mini-mini skirts flashing everyone their underwear.  If you like a lot of this type of stuff in your anime, then be sure to check this show out.  Otherwise, there's really not enough of a story here to warrant a purchase.

The DVD:

Audio:

Both the original Japanese track and the English dub were presented in two channel surround sound.  I listened to both tracks and thought that they were both good.  The dub cast did a good job with their characters and didn't rely on fake accents or silly voices.  They also managed to do a good job matching up the mouth movements.  Neither track had any significant hiss or dropouts.

Video:

The full frame video was a little soft.  The lines were slightly indistinct and hazy.  Fine lines also had a tendency to shimmer, but this was minor.  Other than this the disc looked good.  The colors were bright and the detail was fine.

Extras:

This disc includes a clean opening and closing as well as a gallery of production sketches.

Final Thoughts:

I enjoyed this show more than its predecessor Burn Up Excess.  The fan service wasn't quite as intrusive, and the stories were a little more interesting.  It still wasn't a great show though.  The action was too over the top to be taken seriously, and the comedy wasn't very funny.  If you liked the earlier series, you'll enjoy this one too, but this wouldn't be a good blind buy.  Rent it.
