Third World Cop
Synopsis:
Capone is a top-notch red stripe (Police officer) in the Jamaican Police Force. He's spent his entire adult life fighting crime. His current assignment takes him back to his roots where he encounters friends he hasn't seen in years. It appears that someone is smuggling weapons into the country under the guise of gifts of charity for the local churches. On to the game but unaware of it's players, Capone, declares all out war on the local street gangs and the "Godfather" of crime in this area "wony". Little does he know that he's on a collision course with his dearest childhood friends. Friendship, money and life are all on the line in Palm Pictures'-Third World Cop.
Audio/Video:
The audio for the feature is identified as 5.1 but feels more like a 2.0 experience. The center/dialogue is clear however; the rears only kick in when the film's soundtrack is in effect. The Reggae cuts used in the film are slammin'! Musically, the audio is pretty incredible and it utilizes all of the speakers to create a great "dancehall" effect. But, when the music isn't employed the audio is rather shallow and not very engaging.
The Video is in a word…different. It's shot on video and presented in a video format vs. a film format. It's almost like watching someone's home videos of Jamaica. For the most part the full frame presentation is quite clean and the colors are truly brilliant. The problems develop when the filming goes indoors. The black level is way off and the resulting effect is more of an overexposed (think photographic negative) look than it's previous clarity.
Extras:
The extras on Third World Cop consist of a 15-minute featurette on the making of the film. Also shot wholly on video it continues with the gritty realism that the film is immersed in. Given the film's $500,000.00 budget, set construction was out of the picture. As such, the crew scouted out actual ghetto locations in Jamaica and filmed alongside the residents of these towns. Given the dire economic straits Jamaica was under during the filming of Third World Cop, tensions ran very high when the residents of these locales looked to the filmmakers for an influx of cash. For the right to film in their city. One such incident was caught on film and presented during this segment. Additionally, there are trailers for several upcoming Palm Pictures features and a soundtrack sampler on the disc. You can actually select one of 12 tracks to listen to. They run about a minute each and really get you in to the rhythm of the film.
Overall:
Third World Cop is an excellent moving film that does it's job of storytelling quite well! The actors were very believable if at times unintentionally theatrical. The storyline is good and it is a well-paced film as well. West Indian Potwa (language) is a wonderfully expressive language that adds the truest flavor to the film. If you are unfamiliar with the dialogue, you can select the English subtitles for an easier viewing. What can I say except; this film is great and definitely deserves to be experienced by a larger American audience! There's a reason that this film is the highest grossing film in Jamaican History! The plot is very current and it's execution is handled very well! Highly Recommended
