An enjoyable film about relationships starring Timothy Hutton as a piano player coming home to spend time with his family before he goes back to high school for his reunion. He returns to find his old friends and high school classmates still working in and around the small town, where nothing much has changed; all of his friends have pretty much stayed the same, only they're now older and going through their own problems; trying, as most males are in smaller romantic films, to conquer their fears of commitment when it comes to their relationships with the women in their lives.

Scott Rosenberg keeps the dialogue fast, funny and very smart throughout. I enjoyed all of the performances, especially from Natalie Portman as a young girl who develops a crush on Willie(Hutton). The dialogue between the two of them is very enjoyable to watch and their confrontations and conversations are intelligent and well-written.

I enjoyed the way that the relationships, conversations and dialogue in "Beautiful Girls" felt fairly realistic; not conventional or "Hollywood". The story goes along at the pace of the town and I gladly followed along on the journey with each of these characters. The men learn that real love with a woman can be found all around you, not in the unrealistic idea that a lot of men have about what a woman should look like.

"Beautiful Girls" is a sweet, funny and touching romantic comedy that I found very enjoyable and very entertaining. It may go down roads that have been traveled many times before, but the ways that it deals with this material are fresh, funny and interesting.

THE DVD:
VIDEO QUALITY:Image: An unfortunately not very "beautiful" transfer by Disney. Images are generally, clear but not terribly sharp at all. Colors aren't vibrant and images are hazy and slightly murky throughout. There are quite a few instances of artifacts as well, including dot crawl and shimmering. Occasionally I found a daylight scene to look fairly good, but overall, I was not terribly pleased with the quality of this transfer.

Disney usually delivers some very good transfers to their current films, but this film, which is only three years old, seems to have gotten not much attention when it came time to transfer it to DVD. Contrast and color saturation are average, shadow detail is fair and flesh tones are average looking throughout. It would be really nice if Disney could work on giving an anamorphic transfer to their films, because it certainly would improve the look of this disc. As it is, the quality varies throughout. Occasionally I was pleased with the quality of this DVD, but more than often than not, I think a better job could have been done with this DVD. There aren't really any problems with the print itself in terms of scratches or other problematic elements, but the artifacts and grain that make themselves known make an enjoyable movie not that much fun to watch. It's a dissapointing disc and I hope that Disney can do better work in the future and that this is not an indicator of the kind of product they will be producing in the future.

SOUND: Not a very active presentation, "Beautiful Girls" is mainly a dialogue driven film, with touches of music from the David A. Stewart(who also composed Robert Altman's "Cookie's Fortune") score. No action and no major detail, the sound mix mainly just serves to bring across the dialogue, which sounds fairly good, but not great. Clear, but not as crisp, natural and full sounding as I'd like; I did enjoy the occasional music, though.

MENUS:A goofy and uninteresting looking main menu with no animation. The red and white backgrounds look rather terrible.

EXTRAS:NONE.
