The Third Season

In season three of Married with Children, the Bundy's continue to get into one crazy situation after another. This risque television series takes a slapstick approach to comedy about a man whose life couldn't be any worse. Al Bundy (Ed O'Neill) is a former high school football star turned women's shoe salesman. After his glorious high school days, nothing has really gone in the right way for Bundy. He's such a loser that you can't help but laugh. Al's wife Peggy (Katey Sagal) was his high school sweetheart and a major cause of his headaches. They also have two kids: Kelly (Christina Applegate) and Bud (David Faustino). Across the street are their neurotic neighbors Marcy (Amanda Bearse) and Steve Rhoades (David Garrison). Together, the Bundy's, Marcy, and Steve always get into outrageous and comical situations. However, while the third season is pretty fun, its episodes start to feel repetitive.

In general, this series is very repetitive with its approach to comedy. The majority of the comedy and jokes stem from the same place, Al and Steve getting into some odd situation, the Bundy family's crude behavior, jokes about sex, and so on. The repetitive nature of this series can be good, but at the same time it can get old. Compared to the earlier seasons, there is very little about season three that makes it stand out. In the end, each episode feels a lot of like the last one. So, if you enjoy Married With Children, you're definitely in for a treat.

On a positive note, there are several jokes that occur a lot in this series, which seem to always be funny. One of my favorites comes from Al and Peggy's odd marriage. While they act like they hate each other, they do truly care. The best joke from them is Al's huge fear of sex. He always seems to blows the situation out of proportion, as there is nothing scarier than having sex with his wife. Al and Marcy also have a fun relationship that adds a lot of great moments to this series. The two are always at each other throats, constantly ragging on each other. The two Bundy kids also add a nice perspective of sibling rivalry.

One of the notable episodes in this season includes a fun look into Al Bundy's past. The first episode is "He Thought He Could". In it, Al finds a library book that he forgot to return as a kid. It is a fun episode that shows Al in his youth. In "The Bald and The Beautiful", Al and Steve go through a mid-life crisis, they're balding. It's a comical episode about them trying to find new ways to grow hair. Another good episode is "A Three Job, No Income Family" that guest stars Pauly Shore. It's a funny episode where Peggy gets a job. What makes this a good episode is that it's not something we're bound to see again!

Overall, the third season of Married with Children is a nice dose of comedy. Fans of the series should be happy to have the complete third season with the unaired episode "I'll See You in Court" episode. While I did not think that this was as good as the previous season, it is still a very good season.

The DVD

Video:
In comparison to earlier season DVD releases, the video quality is better. With the second season release, the episodes were not balanced well. The first two discs had nine episodes, while the third disc had four. With the third season, the episodes are balanced with seven episodes on the first two discs and eight on the third. Despite the better balancing job, it's still not great. There is a distinct grain, minor compression artifacts, and the picture is a little too soft. Still, the picture is viewable.

Audio:
The audio in this feature is presented in English 2.0 Dolby digital stereo. The sound quality is quite good and can be easily heard throughout the season. I had no difficulty hearing dialogue. This release also comes with closed captioning.

The extras that come with this release are 10 Easter Eggs that are short clips of interviews with cast and crew.

Final Thoughts:
I've always enjoyed watching Married with Children. It's crude and risque approach to slapstick comedy is something that I feel can be enjoyed over and over again. I still enjoy this series even after many years of watching re-runs on television. The third season offers some great comical moments, but not as funny as the second season.

Also, the theme song "Love & Marriage" by Frank Sinatra has been replaced with generic music. It doesn't really fit as well as Sinatra's song, but once the credits are over and the episode starts, it's easy to forget about the music change. In other words, it shouldn't ruin your viewing experience.
