Three Amigos - Uncensored Stand-Up, The
First up on the DVD is Freddy Soto. Freddy is the most tame of the three comedians, his humor focuses more on family and Hispanic culture than on anything else. He's got a nice delivery and has a very affectionate style with his subject. I did find Freddy's routine to be funny, but of the three comedians in Three Amigos, it was the weakest.
As I mentioned before, I'm a fan of Pablo Francisco. I really enjoyed his previous DVD (Pablo Francisco - Bits And Pieces: Live From Orange County), and was very happy that there was little duplication between his performance here and that DVD. Pablo is very much like a Hispanic Michael Winslow (the human beat box from The Police Academy Movies). What I like about Pablo is the fact that he integrates his vocal abilities with his comedy routine rather than rely on his sound effects and impressions as the entire gag. In Three Amigos Pablo does some great impersonations including an amazing Arnold Schwarzenegger, a spot on 'Movie Trailer Guy', and some signature beat box sounds. In all I really enjoyed Pablo's performance, although it felt the shortest of the three.
Of the three, Carlo Mencia was by far the dirtiest, most energetic and funniest. Carlo jumps right in with jokes about the sexual differences between men and women, attacks issues of race and sexual preference and pushes at almost every stereotype you can think of. What I really liked about Carlo's performance is the fact that he's able to poke just as much fun at himself as he does at others. He's able to comfortably romp through the land of the "non-pc" and does it in a way that shows just how oversensitive people can be about these issues. Carlo is absolutely a raising star and I'm sure we'll see more of him soon.
The Video:
The Three Amigos was directed by C.B. Harding who also did the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. Unlike the Blue Collar Comedy Tour DVD, Three Amigos is presented in it's original aspect ratio of 1:1.78 anamorphic widescreen. The colors are bright and crisp and the image is overall pretty clean.
Audio:
Three Amigos is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. The audio is clear with strong separation between the comedian and the audience. This is the only audio track on the DVD. While there are Spanish (and French) subtitles I was surprised that there wasn't a Spanish audio track for the DVD.
Special Features:
None. Nada. Nothing. On such a short DVD with 3 different comedians I'm surprised that there isn't a single extra on the DVD. No interviews, no commentaries, nothing.
Final Thoughts:
I enjoyed The Three Amigos. It's a solid hour of comedy from three talented comedians. Carlos Mencia's performance is reason enough to rent this DVD. But without any special features and with such a short running time it's hard to recommend purchasing this DVD.
