The Movie:

What I like about former Jackass alumni Steve-O isn't the fact that he's willing to slice up his tongue with a razor blade or the fact that he has no problem picking up elephant doodie and flinging it at people. I don't really admire him for jumping off of tall buildings or lighting his head on fire. In fact, I think most of what he does is really quite stupid. What I like about Steve-O is his honesty and total and complete lack of pretentiousness. He knows, as I know, that what he does for a living is really, really dumb. Steve-O doesn't pretend otherwise and that makes him a more interesting stunt man or performance artist because of it. This down to earth attitude makes him a lot more likeable than he otherwise would be, despite the fact that at times he's a pretty disgusting guy.

This collection of three half hour Gross Misconduct segments is a solid compilation of Steve-O's efforts. The three segments (entitled Male Pattern Baldness, Rise And Falls, and More Bootleg Classics) provide a whole lot of wacky antics from Steve-O and his friends in a less polished and less formal environment than say his Jackass or Wildboyz material. By that I mean, whereas those shows are obviously prepared, much of this material (save for a few pre-meditated pranks played on the general public) happens on the spot and appears to be almost completely unpracticed and quite spontaneous.

While there's a lot of the same drunken frat boy humor on display here that you've come to expect from other Steve-O home video releases such as the Don't Try This At Home DVDs, a lot of this material is fresh enough and funny enough despite the fact that it's been pulled from his archival material to really and truly be worth your time if you found those earlier DVD releases amusing or at least interesting.

Things start off with a bang when Steve-O, standing on a public street corner and surrounded by fans and onlookers, slashes at his tongue with a razor blade then proceeds to throw salt and a shot of tequila on his bleeding lapper only to top it all off by having a bystander squeeze limes into his eyes. If you couldn't guess, this one, like the other releases, is not for the faint of heart. As the three episodes play out we get to see him drink bong water (always a treat as anyone who has been around such smoking accessories knows), lit his head on fire multiple times (it's funny to see him with hair here as since he's gotten more popular he's almost always sported a shaved dome), and jump off numerous rooftops into a pool below doing black flips as he falls.

Some of the more unique moments include spraying fire on a strippers ass on the doorsteps of a public building while skateboarding up the railing, paying a prostitute to urinate on his leg (she cuts him a pretty good rate) and prat falling clad in an Uncle Sam costume from his stilts as confused onlookers are unsure whether to laugh at him or call him a doctor. It's all real, it's all uncensored, and as I said earlier, it's all pretty stupid. But I admit, I laughed like a hyena pretty much throughout the duration.

Along the way Steve-O is aided by a few friends, one of whom shows his willingness to work by approaching strangers, asking them seemingly innocent questions, and then blasting them with loud farts (this part had me in tears I was laughing so hard, but then again, I am a child trapped in a man's body… and a sexy man's body at that). Steve-O is the main star of the show though, and the bulk of the footage features him in the spotlight, such as when he strolls through a suburb with fake poop on his pants asking random people if he can use their bathroom (one kindly old man tells him no, but does tell him he can poop behind the bushes in his backyard for some reason).

It's all very juvenile, it's all very dangerous, and it's all very dumb, but if at least some of this material doesn't make you bust a gut laughing or at least peek your interest then there's your funny bone has probably been fractured and you should go see your doctor before it's too late.

The DVD

Video:

Everything on here comes at you in glorious fullframe and all of it was shot on video – some of it under pretty rough conditions too. As such, it doesn't all look reference quality, especially the bits that were shot outside and at nighttime. For the most part though everything is at least watchable. You're not going to be getting this disc for pristine video quality and given the fact that most of this stuff was done guerilla style without time to really setup the cameras properly, you can't honestly expect it. This transfer gets the job done though – it's not always pretty, but it's always at least acceptable.

Sound:

The audio is on par with the video quality in that it varies from scene to scene but overall, you can always make out the dialogue and the more carefully planned bits actually sound pretty good. Some of the older footage is hissy and a bit flat but again, it gets the job done even if it isn't all that fancy about it.

Extras:

On the second disc are two segments entitled Inside The Freakbox, neither of which have anything at all to do with Steve-O or his style of performing. What this material is seems to be an enclosed booth set up with a camera where drunken party people get to go inside and do their thing. Plenty of girls flash their goods and many guys make bad jokes or try to act cool. It's amusing for about five minutes but I seriously doubt I'd watch this again – it's like some sort of boring and poorly made Girls Gone Wild knock off without as many girls.

Thankfully on the second disc there is a half hour long Bonus Steve-O Interview. While it isn't really shot in a very professional manner (it was done by one of his friends on a handheld camcorder) it is kind of funny and does lend a little insight into him as a person. It's not the most revealing of pieces, as it tends to mainly just touch on the surface rather than probe him with serious questions, but it's amusing and you get to watch him smoke pot in a sports car while driving through suburbia - it does serve to reinforce the fact that he's not too high on himself, just on the herb.

Final Thoughts:

This one isn't likely to turn you into a Steve-O fan but if you're already familiar with his high jinks then you'll want to add Steve-O: Gross Misconduct to your library. There are some truly hilarious moments in here that give this one a high 'party disc' rating that makes it fun in group settings and which also give it some good replay value. Recommended.
