GOTH BOX-THE DVD COMPANION

Synopsis:

Goth Box is a collection of 15 videos from Goth/Mod bands. Of the 15 videos the only band that even remotely sounds musical is Switchblade Symphony. They are almost listenable in their presentation. The problem comes in when the lead vocal actually starts to sing and the discordant melodies run rampant. Goth(ic) music as presented here is a combination of Techno and thrash metal. Something of a hybrid you might say. Every song either deals with dragging someone (a body) lamenting the death of someone, imagining themselves to be vampires and any other bizarre scenario you can employ. Again, Switchblade Symphony had some real promise until that lead vocal thoroughly obliterated any hint of music, they were trying to present.

Audio/Video:

The audio and video portions of the disc are in a word…horrible. Whether by design or poor quality master materials, the music combined with vocals becomes screeching and unbearable to the listener, provided of course, you are not a fan of this wretched dross. If you can name a transfer error, it's got it. Including tracking errors at the bottom of the screen for two of the entries. Most of the videos are concert (live) footage supplemented by silly outdoors scenes and really staged imagery that's too ridiculous even for them. If you can imagine watching Blair-Witch esque photography for every video, your coming close to the disaster this disc really is.

Extras:

If you want to call them extras, there are 12 audio tracks included by some of the artists who also are in videos on the disc as well as other Goth bands that were not presented visually. Just think more of the same only without the visual torture as well. Once again, Switchblade Symphony brings some really cool music that gets trashed by really putrid vocals.

Overall:

This disc was produced by a company called Rhythm Victim entertainment. Well, there's truth in advertising if I ever saw it. The music is awful, the vocals, deplorable, the imagery unbearable. This is the worst waste of time I have ever been a party to. If you are a fan of Gothic music then you probably already have this disc. However, for those of us with musical tastes on a non-Goth level, watching this disc is tantamount to having your teeth pulled sans anesthesia with a rusty pair of pliers. Skip it
