The Movie:

This highlight reel of some of the finest moments during the Vans Triple Crown 04 Surfing event certainly starts out on the right foot, with various surf celebs and locals giving their thoughts about the famed North Shore, Oahu area of Hawaii, where the event is held. The opening piece gives a very nice idea of the history of the place, and what surfing means to local culture.

The scene set, the program then provides interviews with heroes of the sport, such as Kelly Slater, Andy Irons and others. Between the interviews and the highlight footage, the program gives insight into both the thought process and culture of surfing - the rush of being at one with the most incredibly powerful wash of waves, the respect surfers give their peers and the thrill of pulling off a perfectly executed move on huge waves that are moving forward rapidly - whether you're on them or not.

Some of the highlights of this program include: Sunny Garcia's wn and the Vans Hawaiian Pro, making him the first $1m man in prize money; Andy Irons' performance at the O'Neill World Cup of surfing at Sunset Beach; Jamie O'Brien winning his first WCT event in his front yard and the Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters and more.

Overall, despite not being knowledgable regarding surfing, I thougt this was a terrific program: the footage was superbly filmed, the editing and music use was smooth and not as hyperactive as this kind of extreme sports highlight program certainly could be, and finally, the interviews were insightful and interesting, talking about the appeal of surfing in a thoughtful manner. A great program for both pros and casual fans of surfing alike.

The DVD

VIDEO: The program is presented by Epitaph in 1.33:1 full-frame, although some scenes are slightly letterboxed. Although it appears that varying kinds of cameras were used in the filming of the program, the footage does not vary too greatly, with most of it looking crisp and clear, while other portions look only slightly softer by comparison.

Aside from some minor shimmering, the picture looked crisp, bright and clear, with no real concerns - no pixelation or edge enhancement was spotted, and colors did not appear smeared. Colors looked natural and vibrant, with very nice saturation.

SOUND: The stereo soundtrack presents the surfing footage, interview dialogue and music crisply and clearly.

EXTRAS: Lots of music videos from Epitaph artists such as Bad Religion, Dropkick Murphys and Motion City Soundtrack. There's also a bonus CD with Pennywise, Dropkick Murphys and more.

Final Thoughts: It's a surfing highlight reel, but the production values and overall quality are better than these kinds of highlight films usually are. The DVD offers fine audio/video quality, along with a couple of nice supplements. Recommended for those with an interest in the sport.
