THE ORIGINAL KINGS OF COMEDY

Synopsis:

Four of the funniest comedians on the planet are assembled for what proved to be the highest grossing comedy tour in history. Directed by Spike Lee, Steve Harvey, D.L.Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer and Bernie Mac show up, show out and set the stage for some seriously hilarious moments. Strictly stand up, all the way round. The only caveat…don't sit in the front row, have a hair color not quite your own or wear anything that could put you in jeopardy of being ribbed.

Audio/Video:

The audio is rendered in 5.1 DD and delivers a solid aural performance. The only drawbacks are moments when the audio drops out. For whatever reason, it's annoying and never explained. The surround presence and sub really do make the experience feel as though you are at the concert and that's a pretty great feat to accomplish. The video is equally impressive in its presentation. The source material looks as though it was shot on video and then digitally mastered/remastered and finally, anamorphically enhanced for it's digital release. The program while largely, shot at the venue does, fluctuate from backroom session to the actual concert. Only there does the quality of the image change. The backroom segment (poker piece) shows content that may have been altered visually to produce the effect rendered however, without a commentary, we'll never know. In all, the video is beautiful and the transfer sparkles with clarity.

Extras:

The extras on the disc are the film's trailer in 2.0 and seven deleted scenes that equal just about a half-hour in playtime. For the life of me I can't figure out why they cut the scenes, as they are just as funny as the rest of the film.

Overall:

The Kings of Comedy while funny are rather overrated, well at least two of them are. Harvey and Hughley were the first to take the stage and while they had moments of humor, on the whole they were in a word… dry. Now I'm not a prude/purist (just to preface the next comments) but the level of profanity in their standup is ridiculous. There is such a thing, as being funny but here it felt forced. Definitely had the feeling that it was more of a how many times can you say this expletive in so many minutes before the crowd goes wild, kinda thing. At least for the first two performers, it appeared to be their schtick. Without a doubt the true Kings of Comedy are Cedric the Entertainer and Bernie Mac. Their sets were incredibly funny and made the concert IMHO. In any event, this is definitely not a disc for kids but, will prove to be quite funny to their parents. Recommended
