When I first read about the concept of "Batman Beyond", I was horrified. I'd been quite a fan of "Batman: The Animated Series", and I couldn't believe that such a great series was ending to make room for a teenage Batman and an ancient Bruce Wayne. All of those doubts were squashed when I started watching "Batman Beyond", and although it will never truly take the place of "Batman: The Animated Series", it's still one of the best examples of action/adventure animation on television today.

In this new series, an elderly Bruce Wayne has long since retired the Batman mantle, and a high school student named Terry McGinnis picks up where Wayne left off after an unscrupulous executive (who happens to have successfully pulled off a hostile takeover of Wayne Enterprises) has his father murdered. Fans reluctant to pick up the VHS release of "Batman Beyond: The Movie" will be thrilled to learn that there's more to this disc than the 40-minute "movie". Warner has included half of the first season of "Batman Beyond" here, and although most of my favorite episodes are presumably being saved for a second release, the six episodes ought to keep you sufficiently entertained.

The episodes presented here are:
  • Rebirth: Part I
  • Rebirth: Part II
  • Golem
  • Dead Man's Hand
  • The Winning Edge
  • Meltdown

Video: The first eight minutes or so of "Rebirth" (the 'movie') look rather soft, but the remainder looks very crisp and clear, as do the other episodes. The difference between what you see on television and this disc is slight, but noticeable.

Audio: I haven't done a direct comparison to the television version, but the audio on the DVD sounds very full and quite impressive.

Extras: If you consider the 4 bonus episodes to be extras (as I mentioned, the VHS release of "Batman Beyond: The Movie" didn't include any), then I couldn't ask for any other extras. Other than those, a commercial is all you really get.

Conclusion: If you haven't seen "Batman Beyond", you might want to watch an episode or two before purchasing this disc. I'd recommend it to fans of the show, although I don't know if I'd consider it an essential purchase since these episodes can still be seen on television regularly.
