Sheryl Crow: Rockin' The Globe - Live

In Short: Lacking in extras, but containing great audio/video quality and a rockin' performance from Sheryl Crow.

The film:

I've had the chance to take a look at a handful of music or concert discs so far and have found them not always perfect, but never uninteresting. Each of them contained a different feel to how they presented the material and the songs. There have been some that do an excellent job at presenting everything you would want to know about the performer and more ("Time Out With Britney Spears") and documentaries (Radiohead's "Meeting People Is Easy"), but there just isn't always that many that offer artists that I find interesting. I'm always pleased to find a disc that offers a performance from an artist that I like at least somewhat, though. In the case of Sheryl Crow, it's a matter of I highly enjoy and even love some of her more lively tunes ("Everyday Is A Winding Road", etc) but am not quite as interested in some of the slower numbers.

I've been to a number of rock concerts in my life and although I rarely go anymore, I've seen everything from Nirvana to Beck to Rage Against The Machine and many more. Crow's performance on this disc is magnificent and I wish I'd been there to have seen this concert. More than anything, whether you like her music or not, there's no denying that this is a fun performance, a relaxed and good-natured show that is solid entertainment and a fantastic performance from Crow and her backup band going through hits like "All I Wanna Do", "A Change Would Do You Good", "If It Makes You Happy" and more. Although the DVD isn't a complete look into the history of Crow's music, it certainly does the job it sets out to do.

Where the two recent concert offerings I had a chance to take a look at, "Tom Petty: Live At The Fillmore" and "Natalie Merchant: Live In New York City" offered dissapointing video quality, this presentation offers a not quite perfect, but still very solid and certainly enjoyable full-frame picture that's crisp, clear and has strong colors. The audio fares really well, too. The different concerts I've watched have a different feel to each in the sound department. The best way to describe how I felt about the sound here was that it's extremely natural. It's got a really nice balance and feel to it - it's not overly bass-y or loud and yet it's certainly got a nice kick to it. The final result is audio that's clear, crisp, relaxing and not tiring to listen to. While I usually skip through almost any DVD I get at first just to get a feel of what I'm about to get into, on this disc I stopped and found myself listening and even giving a chance to the songs I'm not a fan of. Surrounds are used for crowd sounds and general concert ambience. I liked how their use was subtle and not overdone or distracting. I really loved the audio on this disc and although as I said I've only listened to a few concert recordings so far on DVD, this is the one that I think I'll be coming back to listen to again and again - it's just got such a clear, natural feel to it that captures every detail of the music.

There's really nothing else included on this DVD and although that would usually make me a little bit unhappy, I was so pleased with the presentation itself that I think it can be overlooked. It does make me wish for more of a compliation "feel" to future music DVDs though. I love watching a concert like this, but would also like to see more music presentations that offer sections; a bit of concert footage, some music videos, some interviews, maybe some backstage footage. More of a complete package. From what I've seen (and heard) from music performances on DVD though, I'm very excited about the potential of music and concerts in general on DVD. "Sheryl Crow: Rockin' The Globe - Live" still earns a recommendation from me though - strong audio/video and a great performance from Crow and her band.
