THE STRAIGHT DOPE:
Well, I thought I'd seen it all. Last year I reviewed the DVD of Timothy Leary's Last Trip, an inept documentary about the LSD guru that I eventually dubbed the worst DVD of the year. Secretly, of course, I loved trashing the disc and when the opportunity to review something called Syd Barrett's First Trip came up I jumped thinking that maybe the First Trip would provide the bookend I was lacking to give perspective to the Last Trip. What I found, however, has left me stunned and amazed.

The entire content of the Syd Barrett is one silent 11 minute super-8 home movie nominally featuring Barrett and the other founding members of Pink Floyd. The first few minutes find them on a hill partaking in what is most certainly NOT Barrett's first trip. The finale shows the gang entering Abbey Road studios (from the exterior only). That's it. There is no voice over, dialog, no nothing. The thing is barely in focus and is only scored with some weak Pink Floyd-ish noodling from Dilate.

It's possible that diehard Pink Floyd fans will want to see the band looking so youthful and fresh-faced, but without the real music or any context whatsoever there is no real reason to watch it. Hell, it isn't even long enough to get stoned to.

VIDEO:
The video looks like Super-8 footage that has probably sat in someone's closet for 30 years. It is full of dirt and scratches and is a mess. Some of it looks good, but there is no consistency.

AUDIO:
The audio does not merit any discussion. The music is basically something a child could create on a synthesizer given 15 minutes.

EXTRAS:
There are no extras, although that isn't surprising given that there's barely a primary feature in the first place.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
This is the most worthless DVD that I have ever encountered and I can only hope that it is being distributed for free since paying more than a few pennies for it seems like a crime.
