Chasers
Chasers
Movie:
Chasers, originally released in 1994, was directed by Dennis Hopper. The film stars Tom Berenger (Rock), William McNamara (Eddie), and Erika Eleniak (Toni), with Gary Busey, Crispin Glover, and Dennis Hopper with smaller, supporting roles.
One day before his discharge from the US Navy, Eddie is assigned the task of accompanying Rock on a prisoner transfer. Rock is less than thrilled at the prospect of a new partner and even less thrilled at the sight of Eddie, who seems a bit too slick for his own good. Together they get the prisoner from the Marine base, but there's a slight problem – the prisoner is a female – someone had misspelled her name Tony. Usually regulations require a female escort with a female prisoner, but Eddie unknowingly signed for her, much to the amusement of the Marines, who were only more than happy to get her off their hands. The problems start there and only get worse, as Toni is determined to escape. Rock and Eddie have to get her back to the Navy base by 8 a.m. the next day so she can catch a flight, but when Eddie falls in love, things might not go as smoothly as they had planned.
Chasers is a decent film for two main reasons: 1) The film has some funny moments and 2) Erika Eleniak, who appears throughout the film in various states of undress. The acting is average: Berenger seems to be just coasting through, while McNamara appears to be trying too hard. The plot itself is nothing new, though it does manage to surprise occasionally.
Picture:
Chasers is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen. The transfer seems a tad too soft throughout the film, which results in a loss of color depth occasionally. A few specks also appear and there is some noticeable grain, though both appear infrequently. Colors are, for the most part, vibrant with natural flesh tones and solid blacks.
Sound:
Chasers is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 in English and French. Surrounds are mainly focused in the two front speakers, and aside from the film's music, the rear surrounds are rarely employed. Dialogue is crisp and clean throughout the film with no distortion that I could detect. Subtitles in English and French are also included. The case also lists subtitles in Spanish and Portuguese, but they aren't included.
Extras:
Extras include filmographies for the three leads and trailers for Chasers, Ace Ventura, Chill Factor, Big Bully, and Major League 3. The DVD case lists a "behind the scenes" featurette, but it isn't on the DVD.
Summary:
Chasers is a decent comedy that provides a few laughs – fans of the leads should consider it as a possible rental. Rent it.
