Review by Gil Jawetz | posted May 23, 2001 | E-mail the Author

Martin Lawrence has had a pretty good career run so far: Successful comedian, long-running self-titled TV show, series of successful star vehicles. His humor is heavily influenced by Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, and Eddie Murphy, often covering the exact same material. While he is extremely comfortable onstage and has a good delivery sometimes the derivitiveness of his material hurts the show. I mean, even Homer Simpson lampooned the "White folks talk like this and black folks talk like this!" school of comedy. When he delves into more personal material (like his family and his childhood) or into unexpected details (he quotes Mexican looters as being outraged at the police beating of Rodney Dangerfield) he is really funny.

At this point Martin is pretty well exposed (we even know about his gun-waving nervous breakdowns) and has a sizable following all his own. You So Crazy! is custom made for those fans.

VIDEO:
The video on You So Crazy! is an unremarkable full-frame transfer. It doesn't look particularly sharp or eye-catching, but the film is a little old and has the look of a low-budget concert film.

AUDIO:
The audio is Dolby Digital 2.0 and sounds fine. The mix is a little weak, with audience reactions a bit quiet, but it gets the job done.

EXTRAS:
Only a trailer for You So Crazy! is included which, considering that it is such a strange trailer, isn't such a bad thing. Featuring no footage from the movie, the trailer finds a nearly nude Martin tearing through a field, film can under his arm, being pursued by two white men in suits on horseback. The whole thing, which may be a spoof of the well-known Toys trailer that had Robin Williams standing in a field extolling the virtues of that bomb, almost seems to make fun of slavery and is very unusual.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
While hardly the ultimate concert film, You So Crazy! is perfect for fans of Martin's brand of wacked-out comedy. He may not be as slick as Murphy or as raw as Pryor, but he's a hell of a lot funnier than Carrot Top.
