The DVD
SOUND: Being that Neil Young is reportedly one of DVD-Audio's biggest supporters, I was interested to hear what this concert presentation, in DVD-Audio's 96khz/24bit 5.1 format, would sound like. Although I was generally quite pleased with the audio quality considering that it was a live recording, I was only mildly pleased with how the music was placed in the room - that, and some of the songs do sound slightly better than others.
The presentation is actually a 4.1 offering, as the center channel is not used. Although this technique works well sometimes (the Buena Vista Social Club DVD-Audio), it doesn't sound quite as good other times. Although I thought that Young's voice was carried well by the front two speakers, I would have liked it to be fixed in the center, while the instruments are placed in the front two speakers and re-inforced in the surrounds. Here, as apparently there were microphones placed both on-stage and in the audience, the recording is a natural one. Still, I felt that what was offered by the surrounds often seemed rather similar to what the fronts were offering, slightly taking away my focus.
Still, for a live recording, the audio quality sounded good. The guitar and other instruments came through distinctly and clearly while Young's vocals were not overshadowed by the music around him. The crowd also remains respectful throughout the performance, clapping and providing solid applause between songs, but keeping on the quieter side during the songs themselves.
Extras: Concert footage of "Fool For Your Love" and "Walk On". Credits.
Final Thoughts: "Road Rock" presents a great concert performance of Young and fans will likely find it enjoyable. It's a respectably good live recording, but I don't think it's an example of the best that the DVD-Audio format has to offer sound-wise.
