Synopsis:

Shades of Red Dwarf and Dr. Who Abound in this Canadian Sci-Fi series spawned by the Sci-Fi Channel. A crew of intergalactic misfits roams the weirdest possible parallel universe in a giant spaceship (LEXX) that's actually a genetically enhanced bug. On the run, they're looking for a new home in the rare moments when they aren't looking for a little action or dodging annihilation. -Back of the box Spin. Reading this kind of flotsam, you'd have no clue as to what or whom the show is really about. The best part of the show is the show itself. It's quirky, indefinable, comedic and visually spectacular. In a nutshell, if you enjoy Science Fiction, specifically, the offbeat humor of Red Dwarf, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, or Dr. Who, then Lexx will fit very nicely into your viewing schedule. (Pronounced Shhedule as all of these entries are of British descent.)

Audio/Video:

The audio is a very full sounding DD2.0 platform that fills the listening space with a wide array of audio effect. The dialogue is easily understood and always clear. The video is a full frame presentation that is full of every rich color you can think of. The colors are bold and vibrant and pretty intense. There's a fair amount of pixelation as well as some flecking throughout the print. There were also smatters of grain however, they where very few.

The DVD:

The menus on the disc are animated and thematic in origin. The series itself is pretty cool in a quirky sort of way and had me chuckling more than on one occasion. Series 2 Video Set 3 consists of four episodes that are fall out funny to drop dead strange. They include: 791 Computer "head" 790 is in love with Xev (pronounced Kev0 but is lacking a body to make the physical connection…if you know what I mean. On this particular episode, they encounter a decapitated cyborg with the body of an Adonis and per 790 a crotch to match. Anyway, 790 merges with the cyborg and gets a little more than he expected.

Wake the Dead You gotta love rowdy teens! But you really gotta love rowdy space teens! In this episode five rowdy Space teens camp out aboard the LEXX and do their darndest to drive a crewmember batty! Aren't kids just grand!

Nook The crew of the LEXX arrive on a planet where the only land is a small island where Xev is the first woman its monastic brotherhood has seen in over a hundred years. Obviously the resultant shock to their collective system will bring about actions, these men have fought hard to suppress.

Norb Among other things, the LEXX seems to pick up strays along its journey and this episode is no different. The crew encounters a young boy that seems familiar to all around. However, once they pick him up, he turns out to be an inhuman infiltrator sent by the hated Mantrid to start The "Game" Kind of like the Toss episode in Star Trek DS9. I have to admit I found myself really liking this series and would like to see more of it. Unfortunately, in the way of extras, it offers considerably less than its ultra-kewl episodes.

Extras:

A Behind-The-Scenes featurette spanning a whole 10 minutes is presented. It features no behind the scenes information rather, it's an interview conducted with the Director as well as the writers of the show.

Exclusive Interview with Brian Downey (Stan) Stan is the normal guy onboard. Not real handsome and jonesin' for sex all over the galaxy. This interview is 5-minutes in length and discusses Downey's plans for the character in the way of development and temperament.

"Rated LEXX" Segment:Kai Evidently, this segment picks a character to focus on and give their history and essentially explains who they are and why they do what they do. In this particular entry, Kai's background as a warrior and the last of his kind is identified. As well as his vendetta against those who harmed him the most.

LEXX Trivia:

A series of questions on the episodes in this set are posed. When the answer is selected, a scene from an episode either congratulating or berating you appears and you're off to the next question.

Overall:

This was a first for me. On the whole I've been pretty disappointed with the Sci-Fi Channel in that it has the capacity to be really an awesome channel yet it wallows around in substandard programming and generally awful station-created series entries. LEXX totally took me by surprise and gave me something I wasn't expecting…good entertainment. While Kai may look like Michael Jackson in space, it's still a pretty cool series and well worth your attention. Recommended
