The DVD

SOUND: "Forever Yours" is presented in DTS 20-bit 5.1 audio. Produced by Robert Margouleff and engineered/mixed by Brant Biles, this is an another example of a terrific collaboration between the two, who also did the surround-sound presentation for the DTS CD of the Boyz II Men release "II". Usually when I do reviews of DTS CDs or DVD-Audio titles, I've always ended up sticking to newer releases. Being the first older title that I've sat down to listen to, I wondered how much of an advancement it would be over the original recording or how much could be done in the 5.1 platform with a release that's over 20 years old. With an album full of so many massive hits that are still heard often today, the further question of how appropriately they would be mixed was also in question.

From the first track though, I was instantly impressed by not only the audio quality of the presentation, but the way that the surrounds were tastefully used for the music. I wouldn't be suprised if quite a few dates lead into the listening room for a surround-sound presentation of "Let's Get It On". There's certainly a number of other classics on the album that benefit wonderfully from the DTS 5.1 presentation. "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" sounds especially fantastic, as the background vocals come from the surrounds and answer Gaye's vocals in a way that's thrilling and more engaging than the stereo version could ever hope to be. It really adds a new dimension to the song that's never previously been heard or felt.

Again, I was also very pleasantly suprised by how smooth and crisp the audio sounded. Although the audio quality doesn't match up with the kind of audio quality of today's recordings, I certainly was still very impressed with how fresh and new these songs sounded, with stronger clarity, warmth and detail than I've ever heard from them. There's a great natural sound to the recording already that doesn't employ any trickery or overprocessing; it simply just highlights Gaye's remarkable vocal talents and his exceptionally good backing band. These timeless pop classics really shine in DTS; it was a joy to listen to the entire album again in the format.

Extras: There are no extras on DTS CDs. Hopefully this will come out on a DTS DVD-Audio release someday where additional supplements will be provided.

Final Thoughts: "Forever Yours" is an album nearly 100% full of classic tunes that have really stood the test of time. Although I didn't know what to expect from the audio quality of the release going in, I was impressed and occasionally amazed by how well the DTS CD brought many of these fantastic tracks to new life. The DTS CD release of "Forever Yours" is highly recommended!.
