SOUND: "Love Scenes" is presented in 20-bit DTS 5.1 audio. Although some will likely find this kind of music too basic to prove interesting when presented in surround-sound, I thought the 5.1 format at least helped to open the music out into the room and served to amplify Krall's silky, rich vocals. The musical arrangements are fairly basic - Krall herself provides the vocals for this set of love songs as well as plays piano (quite well); she's accompanied by a upright bassist and a guitar player.
The vocals are spread out across the front three speakers, providing a chance for the singer's rich voice to shine. Bass and guitar are also rooted in the front. Surrounds are often simply used for reverb for the entire album. Although I suppose that maybe moving the guitar or piano to the surrounds might have been interesting, this reverb technique is still largely natural-sounding and enjoyable. It sounds almost as if you're watching the group play in a small-venue/jazz club show.
Fidelity was excellent throughout the album, as vocals sounded clean and warm, the piano playing sounded crisp and detailed and the bass came through richly and warmly. With the material, the music does not sound particularly dynamic or powerful, but remains well-represented by this release. The feeling of envelopment is respectable but there are times when it feels as if the music is being stretched in an attempt to envelop the listener. It works, but this really may not be the best genre for surround-sound music. Here, it does help open up the music a bit and provide a bigger stage for Krall's vocals. Those who are fans of lite jazz will be quite pleased with this release and will likely find it more enjoyable; those looking for an example of active or agressive surround-sound music should probably look elsewhere.
Extras: There are no extras on DTS CDs. Hopefully this will come out on a DTS DVD-Audio release someday where additional supplements will be provided.
Final Thoughts: I enjoyed "Love Scenes" quite a lot (especially the great cover of "You Can't Take That Away From Me"), but it doesn't provide a very engaging surround-sound presentation in DTS 5.1 and that's mainly because there really aren't that many elements to the music - Krall's vocals are definitely the main focus of the album. Recommended for fans of the genre.
