The Show: Carlos Mencia's No Strings Attached stand up routine originally aired on Comedy Central earlier this year. It's now released on DVD with the extended, uncensored, unaired version with an extra 20 minutes of content. If you don't know Carlos Mencia, then you have obviously haven't been watching much Comedy Central lately as his show Mind of Mencia is one of the big shows on their lineup. Mencia's unusual type of stand up is actually quite refreshing. He definitely speaks his mind, and even though I don't always agree I tend to respect his opinion as he always makes a good point.

I wouldn't even call No String Attached a true stand up routine as it doesn't seem to be very rehearsed, it feels more like he got up on stage with an idea of what he might talk about and just started talking. There are few comedians who can execute this type of unrehearsed comedy, Robin Williams is the only other comedian I know that does it and does it well.

As for the amount of laughs from me, that was hit or miss. He concentrates so heavily on getting his point across that he sometimes misses the punch line. But when he does hit the punch line get ready for a good belly laugh. I think if he could refine his act a bit more it would be spot on and a non-stop laugh trip.

As for replay value, like most stand up routines this one just doesn't have replay value for me. Once I know the punch lines I no longer laugh, this doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad DVD. Like I do with most my comedy DVDs I occasionally go back and watch my favorite scene, or like this one, I invite some buddies over to watch it with me.

I wouldn't think Mencia is ready for main stream yet, but I of course would be wrong. Every time I turn around I see his show (Mind of Mencia) advertised. Not only do I hear advertising about Mencia I hear about his antics from people in the real world, this Mencia is a pretty popular guy. As for my recommendation I recommend you rent this DVD strictly because of the replay value, after the initial view it's just not worth another full viewing.

Extras: There's a very interesting extra that talks about the chopper (motorcycle) he rode onto the stage. It shows how a custom bike is made from the ground up in a sort of music, video montage. There are also a few "quickies" which are one clip from Reno 911, which is a mock cops show on Comedy Central, the clip is of a flaming gay character getting caught giving two dollar hand jobs in a Tacos, Tacos, Tacos bathroom this is not my favorite show, and therefore not my favorite clip. Followed by a clip from Mencia's show Mind of Mencia, it's a love song about how Mencia is good at pleasing the ladies, and is quite funny. And best of all is the now world famous clip from the Colbert Report (pronounced Clober Repor) where Steven Colbert announces the new word "truthiness" if you don't watch this clip then you are missing out. It is truly Colbert at his best.

There's the extended version of No Strings Attached with an extra 20 minutes, which I watched both and it's hard to tell where the 20 minutes fit in. I don't think it matters which version you watch, I doubt you'll see where the 20 minutes fit in either. And Finally there is the "Comedy Central Presents: Carlos Mencia" show which is 20 minutes from his first appearance on Comedy Central, this is more of the same, so if you like No Strings Attached you'll like the Comedy Central Presents. The Extras in this DVD are solid, nothing special, nothing I haven't seen before, but hey if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Video: It has a 1.33:1 aspect ratio, nothing special. But I listen to comedy on my Ipod, and honestly feel like I'm missing out, that's why I buy comedy DVDs. I love to see the comedian swinging his arms and flailing around. Also the audience facial expressions add a lot. So for a solid crisp video quality you really gain a lot.

Audio: Audio means a lot to me in a comedy DVD. Put simply if the audio levels are jumpy, or I'm constantly jumping for the remote to turn it up or down, the comedy can be good but I won't laugh. A few parts of the DVD seemed to have uneven mixes but that was for less that a minute of the full show so It doesn't concern me terribly. Otherwise the sound quality is crisp, solid, and most important crystal clear.

Final Thoughts: With Mencia's unique sense of humor and immense popularity I don't see him fading away any time soon, and I love it. He's funny, smart, and a real eye opener to a lot of things that plague our world today. Politically correct? No, he is very Politically Incorrect and occasionally over the line, but he has his good points and intelligent thought processes. Like I said if he could nail those punchlines a little better and maybe tone down the racism, he would be a comedian that my children's children will talk about. Quite simply this is the time when he fades away (like Dave Chappelle) and is never heard from again, or he hits it big time and becomes a common household name. If it wasn't for the replay value I would recommend this DVD. I like Mencia and know I will be watching his show from time to time.
