The DVD
SOUND: "A Woman and A Man" is presented in 20-bit DTS 5.1 audio on this DTS CD release. Responsible for the remix to 5.1 audio is David Tickle, who many will likely be familiar with his excellent work remixing albums from artists like Steve Stevens, Sting and others to surround. As expected from a Tickle effort, the remix for "A Woman and A Man" is tastefully re-purposed to the 5.1 format. Although not musically one of the most remarkable or impressive transitions to surround sound, Tickle manages to keep things engaging and enjoyable without having to resort to audio trickery.
The instruments and vocals were nicely and appropriately positioned throughout the listening space throughout the album. For example, strings from the Seattle Philharmonic sounded superb coming from the rears during "Jealous Guy" and "Love in the Key Of C". The entrance of a jazzy guitar in the rears nicely signals a change in "Kneel At Your Feet" from a ballad to a more lively and interesting number. Carlisle's vocals sounded natural, warm and clear focused mainly from the front three speakers. Occasional background vocals were highlighted in the rears, but this was done rather infrequently.
Audio quality was quite good, as instruments came through clearly and with nice detail; I would have liked to have heard slightly more separation and some particular elements highlighted more than they were, but I found this to be an acceptable presentation.
Extras: There are no extras on DTS CDs.
Final Thoughts: "A Woman and A Man" is a mostly strong solo outing for the former Go-Go, with some uptempo highlights and a couple of enjoyable soulful ballads. The DTS CD will not be one that I reach for as an demonstration of the capabilities of the format to those who have never heard it, but I found it an enjoyable way to experience this album.
