The DVD

SOUND: "Shoeless Joe" is presented in 20-bit DTS 5.1 audio on this DTS CD release, which was one of the early titles released to the format. One of the more unknown artists that DTS has offered in surround, the band's sound is a light, entertaining rock with a touch of Southern flavor at times. The album has been mixed for surround by David Frangoni, who also did the 5.1 mix for Santana's "Abraxas" DTS CD release.

This presentation is essentially more of a "4.1" release, as the center speaker is used only in trace, minimal amounts. The presentation offers the vocals nicely from the front two speakers, with occasional background vocals popping up in the surrounds. Surrounds also do a fine job highlighting some of the superb guitar playing that the band offers as guitars and other instrumentals are specifically highlighted in the surrounds.

Audio quality did not deliver up to the level of productions from more major releases, but the band's catchy, guitar-driven light-rock sound was captured with pleasant clarity and detail. The instruments were highlighted nicely around the listening position and vocals also came through clearly and were easily understood.

"Shoeless Joe" isn't a demo quality DTS CD, but I thought it sounded fine for a smaller production and as I was listening to the CD, I was suprised that I haven't heard more about the band.

Extras: There are no extras on DTS CDs.

Final Thoughts: "Shoeless Joe" is an example of one of those titles that I've picked up not knowing anything about the artist and finding the 5.1 presentation of their music and the music in general to be a pleasant suprise. Very nice, although not exceptional, audio quality and a basic, but effective surround mix make for an enjoyable listening experience.
