Picture Perfect
List Price: Unknown [Buy now and save at Amazon]
In Short: A slight, but entertaining romantic comedy, but nothing special about the DVD.
The Movie:
Strangely, "Picture Perfect" is one of those movies that will always be in my memory. A few years ago, I decided to quit my job being a supervisor at a movie theater - a job that I enjoyed, but I was starting college and decided that it was time to move on. On my last day, I saw "Picture Perfect" and was suprised by how much I enjoyed it, but it's always remained tied to my memory of my last day on that job that I liked. I started this website one month later. Jennifer Aniston has always been my favorite star on "Friends" and although none of her movies have been terribly successful, I think that when she's in films, she has a genuinely warm, sweet presence that's even more winning than her role on "Friends" has been.
"Picture Perfect" is not exactly high art by far, and not even far above sitcom-level laughs, but it's due to the performances of Aniston and the supporting cast as well as director Glenn Gordon Caron that makes the light laughs work. Anniston stars as Kate Mosley, a young advertising agent that's looking to move up in the world, and whose best friend is Darcy(the appealing as always Illeana Douglas), an executive that puts together a plan to link Kate to a man that she met once before in order to make her look less like a free spirit to her boss, who looks for future execs that are already settled into a homelife.
I'm not denying that the film is more than happy to sit in conventional romantic genre cliches for most of it, but there's some nice touches of comedy, such as an early scene where Kate watches another couple get married. The film really does begin to fall apart a little bit at the end, where it throws a little too much nonsense at the audience, and Kate as a character becoming a bit nasty, but the film's light romantic comedy feeling holds up throughout.
"Picture Perfect" doesn't try to achieve much beyond the usual comedy material, but performances, some nicely done scenes and dialogue makes for enjoyable viewing.
The DVD
VIDEO: Generally good, but not really the best that Fox has done with an older title recently (that would be French Kiss.) Images are certainly strong and pleasing, but there are times where I felt they were a little bit soft. Certainly not a major complaint - there have certainly been less pleasing DVDs that I've seen in recent times. Detail in the image is good, but not quite great. Colors are strong and vibrant, with no traces of bleeding or other similar flaws. Black level is solid and flesh tones remain natural and accurate throughout.
There were some flaws that I noticed, but they were slight and infrequent in nature. Shimmering makes a few small appearances, usually in slight traces that are noticable, but not terribly distracting. Not a flawless nonanamorphic transfer, but adequate.
SOUND: Enjoyable audio for a comedy. Certainly not too agressive at all, with minimal use of the surrounds, but still pleasing. Score by Coen Brothers composer Carter Burwell and James Newton Howard is lively and pleasing, as well as nicely enveloping throughout - it's pretty much the highlight of the audio. Dialogue is clear and easily understood. Like most comedies, it's not terribly creative in terms of audio and the focus is mainly dialogue, but the general quality of what's here is pleasing.
MENUS:: Very basic non-animated main menus.
