Pledge, The
Synopsis:
On the day of his retirement from the police department, Jerry (Jack Nicholson) goes out on a particularly gruesome call. A young girl has been murdered and her body is found by a young boy out in the wilderness of Washington state. Due to the inexperience of the other officers on the scene Jerry breaks the news to the little girls' parents. So distraught are they at the news that the child's mother, makes Jerry promise to find her daughter's killer. No matter what the cost may be to himself. Almost immediately a suspect is apprehended and the case against the suspect it seems is a lock. Jerry however, has a sixth sense about these things and believes the killer is still on the loose. Without any official cooperation on the part of his former colleagues, Jerry goes in search of the murderer and stumbles upon a trail of disappearances and murders that point to Jerry's theory being dead on target. What should be a concerted effort by the authorities to apprehend the murderer turns into, one man's obsession to honor a promise made to a grieving mother. The Pledge is an incredibly intricate tale of horror that holds you in rapt attention from its startling beginning, to its unbelievable finale.
Audio/Video:
The audio for the feature is presented in a nicely delineated DD5.1 platform. The film's dialogue is the true star and it's easily understood and very clean. The surround effects and LFE involvement are minimal but, when employed offer some really great aural punctuation. The widescreen transfer is equally stunning in its presentation and provides the usual brilliant Warner Brothers clarity. The colors are all true and the blacks are rich and deep. There were no transfer errors noted.
Extras:
The only extra on the disc is the film's trailer.
Overall:
Nicholson's performance is nothing short of incredible. While the subject matter is pretty hard to take, his mastery of the craft of acting, makes it an entertaining, if not chilling experience. I would have liked to have seen more in the way of extras however, the quality of the film is such that, I'm not really feeling as though I've missed anything by not having a wealth of extras to explore. A warning to the viewer, once you watch this one you probably won't watch it again for some time. It's a great film but it is a jarring experience. Recommended
