Synopsis:

Zorro is one of the most enduring characters the cinema has ever seen. In this highly irreverent version George Hamilton plays Don Diego Vega. A great landowner and very rich man. After a chance meeting with a socially conscious woman, as played by Lauren Hutton, Don Diego begins to question his life's work and what fate may hold in store for him. Coincidentally,that evening a casket bearing the costume of Zorro arrives from his dead father. After donning the cloak and mask his fate it seems is clear and Don Diego Vega becomes…Zorro. Immediately, he sets out righting the wrongs the al'calde' has created and in so doing breaks his foot. After all, until now the most strenuous thing he has ever done was to get up in the morning! With a broken foot, Zorro cannot fight the evil of the al'calde' especially with the al'calde' and his men looking for a crime fighter with a bum foot! Enter Bunny Wigglesworth. Evidently, Don Diego has a twin brother who has been at sea with the British Navy since his childhood. Upon his return to the family homestead, he's shall we say…in touch with his feminine side hence the name...Bunny! After explaining the current situation by identifying the evil plans of the al'calde', Bunny realizes the need to keep Zorro alive during the mending of his Diego's foot. With Bunny picking up Diego's slack, Zorro begins a campaign against the forces of evil that strikes fear into the heart of every evildoer! Zorro is here and he is there. Sometimes in black, other times in red, maybe gold lame' or yellow and yes even avocado. Zorro has taken to fighting for justice in every shade imaginable and with a wit and whip as sharp as the sword his less flamboyant alter ego usually brandishes. With outstanding performances by Hamilton, Brenda Vaccaro and Rob Liebman as the Al'Calde' Zorro the Gay Blade is a tour de force of swashbuckling, gender-bending, rip roaring fun that is sure to please!

Audio/Video:

The audio is presented in a mono platform that does a decent enough job presenting the audio/dialogue of the film. A 5.1 platform would have been perfect however, that wasn't in the cards for this particular IMAGE Entertainment release. The dialogue is all easily understood. The video is an anamorphically enhanced widescreen transfer that has a lot of grainy elements throughout the feature. The colors are vibrant and rich but the exterior shots specifically with the clouds and sky prominently featured give way to a lot of grain in the image.

There are no extras on the disc. Not even a trailer.

Overall:

This has to be my favorite Zorro entry! Hamilton yucks it up to the hilt and Liebman, what can't you say about Liebman's performance! He was incredibly funny and the best Al'Calde' to date! Zorro, The Gay Blade is hilarious and every minute as good as it was when it was released 20-years ago!(has it been that long? Man am I getting old!) Technical short comings aside, Zorro, The Gay Blade is definitely worthy of your attention.
