Walker, Texas Ranger - The Complete Third Season
Continuing to release complete seasons of Walker, Texas Ranger in order after releasing the very last season first (!!), Paramount gives us the third full season of the show in its entirety.
The premise for Walker isn't all that far removed from that of any other cop/law enforcement show. Chuck Norris plays a Texas Ranger operating in the Dallas area named Cordell Walker who deals with the world's problems very much like a cowboy would... a cowboy with a penchant for kicking people in the head, that is. He's a tough guy who isn't afraid to use his fists or his feet when he needs to, but he's also an honorable man who doesn't use his considerable fighting skills unless it's absolutely necessary. He and his partner, Jimmy Trivette (Clarence Gilyard Jr.) cruise around town and right whatever wrongs they can. Trivette was a one-time Dallas Cowboy football hopeful who, due to a shoulder injury, had to leave the football world and has since joined the Texas Rangers. He quickly rose up the ranks to become Walker's right hand man. When Walker isn't fighting crime, odds are pretty good he'll be making time with his sexy lady friend, a district attorney named Alex (Sheree Wilson). Later seasons would introduce a few more Rangers into the mix but these earlier (and better) seasons more or less just concentrate on the adventures of Walker and Trivette.
The twenty-five episodes contained in this complete second season, running from September 23 1995 through May 18, 1996, are laid out as follows:
Blown Apart: Years ago Walker helped put a mass murderer behind bars for good - or so everyone thought. When he escapes, he starts killing off everyone involved with his conviction and Walker is high up on that list.
Deep Cover: Drugs are getting to be a worse problem than usual so Walker goes undercover as a cocaine dealer to infiltrate a drug smuggling ring. Andrew Divoff from The Wishmaster guest stars.
The Guardians: Oil is just a part of living in Texas so Walker takes none too kindly to a group of ecological activists who resort to terrorist tactics in their attempt to destroy an oil rig.
Collision Course: C. D.'s niece is kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend who forces her to join him on a cross-county rampage of bank robberies. Walker promises to track her down and bring her back in one piece.
Point After: When the popular coach of a local football team winds up dead, Walker and Trivette are called in to check out the scene and see what's what. Foul play is obviously the cause, and the two Rangers decide to solve the crime.
Evil In The Night: Things get pretty hairy for Walker when the desecration of an ancient Native American burial ground results in the resurrection of an evil medicine man bent on revenge. Billy Drago shows up in this episode.
Final Justice: We learn about the murder of Walker's parents when he finds out that one of their killers is still at large. He gets on the case, pulls a few strings, busts some heads and gets his man. The end. Clu Gulager guest stars.
The Lynching: A mentally handicapped boy is accused of killing an old lady in his small town. The citizens get all worked up and decide to give him a good old fashioned lynching... until Walker shows up and shows them a thing or two about justice.
Whitewater (Part One): Alex and Walker decide to get out of town for some rest and relaxation and take a nice white water rafting trip. Unfortunately, one of their fellow rafters is murdered.
Whitewater (Part Two): Walker's 'vacation' continues as he and Alex have to find out who murdered the rafter and why.
The Covenant: Even though it's Christmas time, Walker's hard at work. Two gangs have gone to war the escalating street violence means that the Texas Rangers are going to have their work cut out for them.
Rodeo: An old ex-boyfriend of Alex's winds up as the only surviving witness of a high profile mobster's trial. Fearing for his live, Walker decides that he and Trivette need to make sure that this dude stays alive long enough to testify.
Flashpoint: A gang of violent Irish freedom fighters are Hell bent on killing a man trying to bring a peaceful resolution to their cause. Being the diplomat that he is, Walker is brought in to protect the guy from the crazy Irish gun nuts.
Break In: Walker and Trivette go under cover as jailbirds to bust a corrupt prison warden. Soon, the Warden fingers Trivette as a cop and has him removed, leaving Walker inside all alone.
The Return Of LaRuu: One of Walker's archenemies, Victor LaRuu, is let out of prison early for good behavior. That same good behavior turns very bad when he decides to exact his revenge on Alex and Walker. So much for reform!
The Juggernaut: Alex goes out on a limb and helps a battered woman when her husband goes off to jail. Once he's let out, things get dangerous when he decides he wants his wife back and that no one is going to get in his way. Walker has to beat the crap out of him and save the day.
El Coyote (Part One): In one of the strangest episodes in the history of the show, Walker goes undercover as a Mexican migrant worker so that he can bust open an illegally people smuggling ring.
El Coyote (Part Two): Walker's under cover work continues as he gets closer to the heart of the operation in hopes of bringing it to its knees.
The Avenger: Walker kills a gun smuggler in the line of duty. His brother isn't happy about that and so he rounds up a group of martial arts experts to take Walker down and make him pay.
Behind The Badge: Trivette is crushing on the cute host of a COPS style reality show called Behind The Badge and Walker keeps busting in on him and ruining his chances by trying to do silly things like enforce the law.
Blackout: Walker goes undercover to bust a money laundering scam that a criminal organization is running out of a casino. When he gets bopped on the head, he wakes up with amnesia.
Deadline: Budget cuts are a problem for everyone, especially for the Texas Rangers when a politician tries to get rid of the force. Soon, he'll realize how badly they're needed...thanks to Walker!
The Siege: Walker and his buddies decide to head out into the middle of nowhere and do some fishing. Unfortunately, drug dealers show up and try to take over the cabin they've rent. Walker can't catch a break. First the white water thing, now this.
The Moscow Connection: A series of daring warehouse robberies provide clues indicating that the Russian mafia is behind it all. The Rangers figure they're going to need some assistance on this one so they call in some Russian cops to help them out.
Miracle At Middle Creek: A little kid gets himself into a man sized predicament when he gets stuck under ground. Walker moves in to help him out and he too gets trapped and buried alive!
Hall Of Fame: C. D. is stoked because he's being put into the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame but the celebration is cut short when a lunatic murderer shows up and rains on his parade.
By this point the characters in the show have been well established and so we're able to delve into their backgrounds a little bit and the writers flesh things out a little more than was the norm for the seasons prior. Additionally, the writers bring in some genuinely unexpected villains and branch out a little but putting Walker and crew into some oddball situations (seeing Chuck Norris impersonate a Mexican is just odd.... it doesn't work even if it does provide some politically incorrect unintentional hilarity in much the same way that Sean Connery's take on a Japanese man did). Aside from that though, this series sticks to its guns and delivers the kind of simple, mindless action fodder that made the show the success that it was. Walker Texas Ranger isn't deep or heavy or thought provoking, it's just simple and entertaining. Nothing wrong with that at all and the show does its job well.
Video:Seeing as this was a television series, it shouldn't surprise anyone to see it presented fullframe, which is how it was shot. Overall, the quality of the video is pretty good. Some of the darker scenes exhibit some mild compression artifacts here and there and there is some minor edge enhancement present in a few scenes but the colors come through reasonably well and there's a nice level of detail present in the picture. While there is a certain level of softness present throughout the episodes, the video quality on this release looks as good, if not marginally better, than the episodes looked on broadcast television. Also worth stating, however, is that some are particularly grainy to the point where the material looks a lot older than it is. This doesn't happen on every episode but a few of them are in worse shape than others in the set for some reason (this was an issue with the last set as well).
Sound:The entire season is presented in its original Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo with optional closed captioning available in English. Optional dubbed tracks are provided in Spanish and Portuguese by way of two Dolby Digital Mono tracks and subtitles are provided in Brazilian and Portuguese. Dialogue is plenty clear enough and the opening theme song sounds nice and lively. The various musical cues used throughout the episodes have got sufficient punch to them, as doe the sound effects. Overall, the sound mix on this set is very solid.
Extras:Once again, there are no extra features at all on this set, unless you consider chapter selection a special feature. And you shouldn't. Because it isn't one.
Final Thoughts:If you dug the first two seasons and crave more of the same then Walker Texas Ranger - The Complete Third Season is for you. It would have been nice to see some extra features but at least the episodes appear to be complete and the quality is decent. Recommended.
