The Movie

The Last Run is a movie that you probably have never heard of. It was written by Jonathan Segal and Todd M. Camhe (their first writing venture). Headlining the cast is The Wonder Years' Fred Savage in a role that doesn't feel quite right for him. Savage is an average guy who is betrayed by his girlfriend. In the aftermath, he goes on a sexual rampage, until hitting rock bottom and finding salvation in an old flame. The content is raunchy and includes dark, sexual-nature comedy with a dramatic subtext that some will enjoy, but most won't.

Steven Goodson (Fred Savage) is a twenty-eight year old average guy. He works as an accountant. For the most part, he has been successful in his job, but it is not the highlight of his life. The most important thing, or rather person, is his girlfriend and best friend Chloe (Andrea Bogart). In the beginning of the movie, Steven gives a monologue about how happy his life has become since he met Chloe. For the past two years, they have only grown closer and done amazing things together. He is lucky beyond words to have such a beautiful girl by his side. Steven, however, soon finds out that his perfect relationship is not as great as he had thought it was... it turns out Chloe has been cheating on him.

When Steven finds out Chloe has been cheating on him, they breakup. And how he finds out about it, is a good precursor to the raunchy, dark sexual nature found in the rest of the movie. While having sex, they are interrupted by a phone call for Chloe. Steven listens on the other end and finds out it is a guy she is sleeping with on the side. The situation is little more raunchy, with a lot of sexual antics and actions that might be funny at a glance, as it doesn't seem like a normal situation for Fred Savage (picture Full House's Bob Saget in his Entourage cameo appearances) to be in.

In the aftermath of the breakup, Steven goes to his friend Jack Manning (Steven Pasquale) for help. Jack puts Steven's relationship into perspective: Steven is an average guy who ended up with a woman one-hundred times more attractive than he and it is natural she would cheat on him because every guy dreams of being with a girl like Chloe. Jack's advice is to move on and the best way to do that is to sleep with as many girls as possible.

Unfortunately for Steven, Chloe was his confidence and what made him feel like a real man. He thinks Jack is giving him bad advice (because as the movie claims, his idea of beauty has been warped by society) and tries to get another girl like Chloe. So, he buys the best of everything, from expensive clothes to a Mercedes to stylish accessories. But none of it ropes him the girl he is looking for. Finally, he hits rock bottom and realizes he is not going to succeed. This is when things start to change.

Steven turns into a sex-crazed fiend, spending his money on hookers, strippers, escorts, and everything else he can to enjoy the pleasures of life. It affects his work and his loses his job. Life starts to get better when Steven meets an old crush from high school Amelia (Erinn Bartlett) and he realizes he has a problem. He has to forgo his sex-starved ways to be with the girl of his dreams.

As an overall movie, The Last Run is not very good. It fails to be entertaining on several levels. The biggest problem with the movie is its storyline. The story, which could have been wrangled with comedy, goes another direction and focuses on the raunchy sexual drama. Lead actor Fred Savage has sex with a myriad of different girls in one-night stands and paid sexual encounters. At first it is amusing, but quickly gets repetitive and dull. This is unfortunate, as the movie starts fairly interesting and has the makings for a decent love story (versus the sex story it turns into).

Another major difficulty is the characters. From leading to supporting, none feel right in their roles, nor are they characters that develop into people you care about or even want to know what happens next in their lives. In the end, The Last Run starts off with a decent storyline and quickly turns into a raunchy lackluster film about a guy you don't care about.

The DVD

Video:
The video is given in 1.78:1 ratio anamorphic widescreen color format. For the most part, the picture quality looks pretty good. There is a distinct grain in the video and it is noticeable throughout the feature, especially during the darker scenes (which there are many).

Audio:
The audio is given in three English formats, Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Stereo 2.0, and DTS 5.1. The surround sound audio tracks are overkill, as the feature is dialogue drive. Still, the tracks come off fairly rich and vibrant.

Extras:
There are no extras included with this DVD release.

Final Thoughts:
The Last Run tries to be something it is clearly not, an entertaining movie. It is about a guy whose life spirals out of control when he becomes a sex addict. The story follows his raunchy adventures and a very short turning point when he reunites with a high school sweetheart. The story fails to be compelling or engaging, providing lackluster and repetitive raunchy situations with characters who you never care about. In the end, The Last Run is a movie best missed.
