Encino Man
Encino Man is a Pauly Shore movie, and if you enjoy his comedy, you'll like this movie. I happen to enjoy his movies, and this is no exception. Non Shore fans should take note that Pauly has a lesser role in Encino Man than his other movies, so you might like this even if you don't like him. If you do like Shore, be sure to check out Son In Law, also available from Disney on DVD. Also with decent roles in Encino Man are Sean Astin, Rick Ducommun, Michael Deluise, Megan Ward, Robin Tunney, and Brendan Fraser. While the material is not stressing, the actors do a passable job. I know many film fans loathe Shore's films, but when I am in the mood for mindless fun, they're a great choice.
Video: Encino Man is presented in a 1.85:1 non anamorphic transfer. The print looks pretty good, with few nicks and other wear signs. Encino Man features some intense color use, especially in Shore's wardrobe, and this disc handles every hue perfectly. Even with all the reds and oranges, there is no bleeding or oversaturation. Black levels seem a little on the bright side, but not to an extreme degree.
Audio: This disc uses a 2.0 surround track, and it gets the job done. Encino Man is driven by dialogue, which sounds excellent on the disc, with clarity and no interference from the other audio segments. The surrounds are non existent in most scenes, only waking up for minimal effects and the soundtrack. Aside from some minor issues with vocal volume, this track is a good one.
Extras: The disc includes the theatrical trailer as well as a brief promotional short. Not much, but more than usual for a Buena Vista release.
